Eating manners

Rye bread is not my thing. Tastes funny to me.

Canadave, if you consider baguette hard-crusted, you should see Tuscan bread: you can drive nails into concrete with that.

You're thinking of Sector 7. I do like a nice hard\chewy crust sometimes, myself.

And if you don't like rye bread, what the hell can you have smoked meat on? And a life without smoked meat is a depressing thought indeed.

Damn. Sorry mate, I messed up my quotes (it's the second time it happens to me today. Should I be worried? :shifty:)

I would say, a life where you don't need to smoke your meat against the biting cold, but you eat it fresh and juicy only lightly touched by the grill, with plenty of fresh, raw, crunchy vegetables. I can live that life. ;)

Talk to your doctor about this. They can help.

Sounds like the words of a man who's never had a smoked meat sandwich from a good Montreal deli. ;)

(Not that there's anything wrong with freshly grilled meat, but a good brisket is in a totally different category of delicious.)

   That's not rye bread -that's white bread with a hint of rye!

This is rye bread:

And this is how you eat it.

Oh, hey, Julemand - would you have a recipe for that rye bread?

mr trampledamage lived in Stockholm one summer and pretty much lived off the local rye bread, but we've never been able to find anything as good either in the UK or here in Canada.

It's good on all ends of the spectrum. I like a good pumpernickle, too. ;)

It's all context, though... Jewish delis traditionally have used white-rye bread, so that's what they use today. I find that while it's not quite as flavourful as a dark rye, it is just about as heavy and works quite well with the meat.

Don't get me wrong; I love a good sandwich made with soft bread (it' just a shame you can't see what's in it unless it's made as a cow with a cracker on each side) but I've often wondered how people that live off that kind of food can have a decent dump! -I mean: there's hardly any fiber in it

I've found a couple of recipes for you, trampled a magi:

Danish Rye Bread (aka Rugbrød)
A new life in Denmark - a Londoners tale

I have never baked it myself though so I couldn't tell if they're any good.

The only thing that look vaguely inviting is the tall glass of beer. :p

More seriously, I'm not accustomed to Nordic food, so I can't really commend on it. I've tried German food and it wasn't really my tastes, but you never know. Still, I plan to visit some time or the other, so I'll have the opportunity to change my mind. There are always surprises: for example, I found Scottish food surprisingly palatable.
