Eat nuts, kick butts: Marvel's Unbeatable Squirrel Girl

Has anyone told John Barrowman? (Investigate the connection if you dare.)

You may know Vayntrub from her AT&T commercials...

Thanks for posting. I wasn't aware of her, but it looks like she'll be a fine pick for the redoubtable Doreen Green. Hopefully New Warriors will provide material to do justice to her and to the Squirrel Girl property. The Unbeatable Squirrel Girl has been, I think, one of the best, funniest and most avant-garde comic books out there. Hopefully they'll capture something of its wit and élan.

@Nightowl1701 -- Perhaps a thread title change request to the mods is in order? "New Warriors Anticipation Thread"? "Squirrel Girl and the New Warriors Anticipation Thread"? "Squirrel Girl (and the new warriors) Anticipation Thread"? "Squirrel Girl and Her Amazing Friends"?

I could get behind dropping the slogan at the front and adding "(& The New Warriors)" to the end of the existing title.

And after seeing those two videos Turtletrekker posted, I am head-over-heels in love with Milana. Or at least in very deep lust.:adore:

Wow! Squirrel girl gets live action comedy show. I have heard it all. mediocrity celebration at its finest. I'll stick with Orville.

Have you read the comics? Squirrel Girl is just about the least mediocre superhero in Marveldom right now. She's way up at the top of the ocre.

It's hard for me to imagine anyone other than Ryan North writing Doreen. His voice and humor are difficult to replicate.

I think Milana is a great choice! I've had a slight crush on her too, for years.

For those interested, she also has a channel on YouTube -- Live Prude Girls. Very funny stuff!

She's done stuff on "Funny or Die" channel, as well.

Is she/this show part of the MCU or its own thing?

The character description for Speedball says "Robbie grew up watching Quinjets take off from Avengers Tower and loves the idea of being a hero." So it's not a standalone series, but one that exists in a version of the larger Marvel Universe including the Avengers, and since it's from Disney/Marvel Studios, it stands to reason that it's the MCU version. (Although it'll probably be like the other MCU TV series, in that they acknowledge the movies but the movies ignore them.)

I've only seen her in those phone commercials, and she didn't leave much of an impression. Still, now that I take a closer look, I can see how she might work in the role, though I'm disappointed they didn't get Mae Whitman (I read that the script was actually written with Whitman in mind). Honestly, I feel Vayntrub might be too hot for Doreen. Part of what's cool about the character in Unbeatable is that she's not your standard sexy, curvy glamour babe, that she's more an empowerment figure for young female fans than a fantasy figure for male readers. She is supposed to be a teenager, after all (though she's college-age in USG).

On the other hand, it's possible to de-glamorize actresses as well as the reverse. I just saw Jodelle Ferland in person at the Shore Leave Convention this past weekend, and she's hotter in person than she is on Dark Matter, where they dress her and make her up to look more girlish and un-sexualized, befitting the young age of her character.

It took half an episode for me to realize Alison Brie was the lead in GLOW. Between makeup and costuming, they can make just about anyone of (average or better looks) gorgeous or homely.

I haven't read them to compare, but Squirrel Girl is also featured in USAVengers, the series formerly known as New Avengers (vol 4) by Al Ewing. So she has been written by someone other than Ryan North on a regular basis for a couple of years now.

Well, of course -- she was created by Will Murray and Steve Ditko in 1992, after all. "It's hard to imagine anyone else writing her" is not a literal assertion of incapacity, it's a rhetorical device to express how strong an impact North's writing of the character has made on me. I've read SG stories by other writers, but they don't feel quite authentic to me, because I've come to associate Doreen so indelibly with North's inimitable dialogue style.

Dan Slott wrote some very funny stuff with the character as well.

Dan Slott's GLA (complete with Squirrel Girl) was awesome. She's written so differently then the current one that they're completely different characters though (with the original/Slott version being far, far superior in my opinion, as someone who loves original SG and completely loathes the weird cartoony college student they've stuck the name on). The original version of squirrel Girl also had a few appearances in Bendis's Avengers as the nanny for Luke Cage's kid. That's the version that deserves a TV show, not the crap one that currently has a comic (the current version even ruined the recent GLA comic because it was riding the crappy SG's coattails).
