East coast earthquake.

Two nuclear reactors in the area of the quake in VA have reportedly been taken offline for a precautionary inspection.

According to the USGS, the largest earthquake to cause any damage in Virginia was a 4.8 back in the late 1800s. [Link].

My first earthquake significant enough to notice.

I've felt them here in northern nj before, but never like this one. the other ones were more of a vibration, this one was like a rocking, almost like sitting in a rowboat.

Yeah, that's what I noticed. Kind of a gentle swaying. Not like the ones I've felt in Illinois, Indiana, and Alaska, where it's a more violent shaking.

Felt it here in NW North Carolina. Saw the windows in the house shaking and felt like a heavy truck convoy was passing by. Thought it may be an earthquake but dismissed it until the news report confirmed it.

Looks like it knocked some sense into a few traders; instant 50 point drop in the Dow, following by nice rally once they realised they're still alive. Now fellas, keep that optimism going for a few more days...

Just had an earthquake in the east coast. Felt it here in northern nj, shook my house.

Eta... Reports are it was a 5.8 magnitude with the epicenter located in VA. DC is evacuating government buildings.

There are other reports that it was a 6.0 mag quake.

More... Quake was reportedly felt as far north as Boston, ma and as far south as charleston, sc. Cell phone service in VA area has been effected.
hwere in NJ do you live.. I am from Hackettstown now I live in the Poconos, I did feel it. My cell service is down because of it.

Sorry, but ...

I guess I've lived in California all my life to think something like that is so insignificant.

5.8-6.0 is not insignificant even by CA standards. That's on par with the strongest one I experienced living in the Bay Area for 10 years--it shook my apartment noticeably and moved a few photo frames on the wall a bit.

The insignificant ones are the ones that feel like a truck rumbling on the street in front of your house, which this one definitely eclipses.
