East coast earthquake.

Internet was fine, and I had been reading the responses on CNN for the last hour. Apparently there are Californians who think that people in DC are a bunch of whining pussies because to them, a 5.8 quake is nothing. Apparently they all seemed to have forgotten that everyone who lives and works in the District still has a feeling of innate dread about terrorist attacks, despite the eventual realization that it was a quake.

Yeah. Fuck them. California can't handle rain, lack of rain, wind, or a cigarette being flicked out a window without half the state imploding.

Also...I mock their value system.
:guffaw:

Oh yeah? You appear foolish in the eyes of others. Also, I have engaged in sexual intercourse with your wife or significant other.

There is some talk about the USGS worrying this may have been a preshock to a larger quake, and is looking at the stresses the reigons fault lines are under.

Yeah, but they've dropped that, since there have already been two small aftershocks of decreasing intensity.

^^^ Yep - felt those too. Maybe the Mayans were right.

Interesting psychological note - I work in a large place where people aren't always too terribly friendly with each other. After the quake, I noticed more smiling faces and got more "hi, how ya doin?" greetings in a couple hours than I have in the past couple of months. Interesting how traumatic or near-traumatic experiences can drastically change people's attitudes and perceptions. Probably a stark reminder of how insignificant and powerless we are in the face of nature - especially since, geologically speaking, this was nothing more than a small belch and a little dribble down Gaia's bib.

I am only 96 km from the 5.9 epicenter. This is extraordinarily rare for VA.

I was in the middle of a bridge tunnel when it happened, didn't feel it, but my friends felt it strongly
The tires of your vehicle and the fact that you were in motion (rather than stationary) are a big reason you didn't notice. Even just being up and walking around, rather than sitting in a chair, can make a big difference in whether you notice.

Up yours, Toad Boy. :p

Seriously, though, a 5.9 is definitely big enough to be exciting and could knock things off walls and shelves. It may—depending on a number of factors including proximity to the epicenter, depth of epicenter, type of fault motion and the underlying geologic structure of where you're located—be enough to cause moderate damage to structures.

Apparently, I was too engrossed in my work to notice the earthquake. Suddenly there were people streaming past my desk telling me we must evacuate. I finished up a couple of things and went out, slightly behind everyone else, and found out it was a quake as we milled around outside. I never felt a thing. I thought it was bomb threat or something.

Tomorrow looks to be my first (and most likely only) Earthquake day. They have to inspect the school buildings for structural damage. I'm within 50 miles of the epicenter and the shaking was pretty intense...students freaked out a bit.

Same thing happened in California after the Loma Prieta quake. Took about a week for everyone to go back to being assholes.

Here's something cute.

Edit: Never mind. Of course someone beat me. :klingon: I'm going off to sulk now.

Times where I professed to like you were fraudulent.

A possible cause has been found for this uncharacteristic earthquake..

Apparently there's a good rumor that an economic recovery is underway... since they evacuated all the Congressional & governmental buildings in DC.

;)

Cheers,

I heard it was felt in Toronto. Shook my house. My first earthquake too. XD I just thought, that's a weird kind of shaking.

Apparently, there are cracks in the Washington Monument. And there was considerable damage to the National Cathedral. :( Mostly the spires, but there may be some damage to the structure, too.

20 buildings in my town had damage.
