EARTHQUAKE!

The Boy Who Cried Worf

I think we just had an earthquake here in Southern California. It was very light, but very long, about a full minute. Anyone else feel anything?

Yes, you did:

Yeah it was shaking quite a bit here in San Diego. The USGS site says it was about a 6.9, south of Mexicali somewhere.

I felt it about 90-100 miles NNW north of the epicenter -- bit of a fun ride. There have been many light to moderate quakes (2s, 3s, 4s) in the Mexicali area and up through Salton Sea region over the last several days.

Wow, so it must have been pretty intense down there. That's about 150 miles from where I am. I hope there isn't too much damage. The Western Hemisphere seems to be taking a beating lately.

Believe it or not we actually felt it all over the Phoenix area. This is NOT normal. In 36 years I have NEVER felt an earthquake here.

It looks like you're getting some after quakes all around the area.

Hope everyone is okay.

There have been reports of people getting stuck in elevators in Los Angeles and about all of the rides being shut down at Disneyland as a precautionary measure, but nothing much yet about what it was like closer to the epicenter. I'd be surprised if there weren't some damage in and around Mexicali.

Also, a 5.1 has happened in the El Centro/Brawley area, so that probably means stuff knocked off of store shelves, at least.

I was so busy getting a map up I forgot to say that I hope everyone's okay. Sounds wild! It doesn't help I watched "2012" last night.

The one near Brawley looks to be on the Imperial fault, a different branch from the main earthquake (the main fault isn't labeled but appears to be the southern continuation of the Elsinore fault). Neither was on the San Andreas fault technically (it's further east), but all three fault zones are related branches of the plate boundary. So the Brawley quake is probably a case of stress triggering (where the strain released by one earthquake changes stress levels on nearby faults), rather than a true aftershock. EDIT: Nevermind, the USGS revised the location so it's actually a normal aftershock on the same fault. There have been at least three mid-sized aftershocks in Baja (including one 5.4) on the same fault too. Other earthquakes in California (like the ones in northern California) are unrelated, however.

They haven't published the fault solution beachball yet but at that size it basically has to be a strike-slip earthquake on the San Andreas system. There are also extensional faults related to the opening and rifting of the Gulf of California near that area but they won't produce something as big as a 7.2. Although I wouldn't be surprised to see some oblique extensional component to the fault movement.

While reportedly felt in Bakersfield (about 150 miles south of me), nothing here in Fresno. Not surprising; no faults within miles and miles of Fresno. As opposed to everywhere else in CA.

My sister in Temple City (near Pasadena) said her cats acted a bit nuts, then she felt a shake. Mom (in Vegas for the week) felt nothing.

Damn. 7.2. My daughter is in L.A. right now (I think, she was in San Diego yesterday but I think it was a day trip) and she felt it.

I feel for those close to it, but am selfish enough to be grateful that San Diego or L.A. wasn't the epicenter.
