Earth culture in Trek's time period

To be sure, what Riker said was that "they" (apparently including all the people he knew and respected) no longer enslaved animals for "food purposes".

Perhaps other purposes of slavery are fine, but slavery for the purpose of eventually being eaten is considered too gruesome? Certainly it would be impossible to collectively condemn all forms of slavery - or else Riker would have to cease being slave to Starfleet, or to his nasty habit of breathing air.

Of course, Riker himself is an avid killer of fish for food purposes. But there's no element of slavery there if he fishes free and wild little swimmers from Alaskan rivers.

I remember hearing Vulcan music in TNG (I think it was in "Sarek" and "The Mind's Eye"). They also make references to Klingon opera sometimes. Perhaps aliens' music has become popular on the 24th century Earth?

^ Riker said "we don't enslave animals anymore", maybe that horse was mechanical?

If animals aren't enslaved anymore, than what the hell was Spot? Did he or she of whatever the hell its gender of the week was consent to be the property of an android serving aboard a starship?
Spot was actual not a cat, Spot was one of those beings like the one who was a companion to Gary Seven.
