Early Friday Estimates - Trek #5 - $3.75 million - Passes $200 Million

Re: Early Friday Estimates - Trek #5 - $3.75 million - Passes $200 Mil

Looks like 250m (domestic) is definitely within reach with each passing day. Star Trek is gold.

I'm still not banking on that yet. It'll likely lose at least 30-35% of its theatres next weekend, so this might be it's last weekend with decent returns. But it's not out of the question.

Well lets hope with more repeat viewings and last ditch WOM will warp this baby to 250m domestic. But even if it ends up with somewhere around 220m-240m, it would be incredible considering the bad shape the franchise was in before May 8. Actually Star Trek 09 is too good to be true, it's like history in the making... for the franchise of course. :techman:

Yeah, good point. I just watched ST:TMP on Blu-Ray and on the commentary track, one of them (i think Garfield Reeves-Stevens) pointed out four key moments in the franchises history:

(1) "The Cage" (the beginning)
(2) ST:TMP (showing it could be a movie franchise)
(3) "Encounter at Farpoint" (showing that Trek could exist without the original characters)
(4) JJ's Star Trek movie

Steve Mason. He used to run a reputable website, but retired that and send out stuff over Twitter now since he figured people just wanted numbers and not his analysis.

I am still not quite used to Steve Mason as a movie box office expert since he does a sport talk show here. He is a cool guy.

(4) JJ's Star Trek movie

The latter (a) showing that Trek could exist with different actors playing the original characters, and (b) providing opportunities for the same classic characters to encounter all-new adventures.

I agree completely with these 4 landmark moments in Trek history. And I'm absolutely giddy that we just witnessed the tremendous success of this last one! :D

Warner Bros' disappointing Terminator 4: Salvation is #4 Friday with $5.3M (-64%) and an expected $20M weekend. Followed by Paramount's Star Trek and Imagine/Sony's Angels & Demons battling for 5th with $3.9 vs $3.8M respectively Friday: both may be in the low teens for the weekend. But the JJ Abrams' franchise reboot will become the first movie of the year to pass $200M this weekend.

updated the first post with weekend estimates from boxoffice.com

Re: Early Friday Estimates - Trek #5 - $3.75 million - Passes $200 Mil

Why would the theater count go down by that much if the movie is still performing well; and why no extra IMAX venues?

Quite simply there are newer movies coming out that will likely make more and they have already purchased.

Yup. It's just how it works. You can see how Iron Man started losing theatres at a good pace starting with its 4th weekend too.

Re: Early Friday Estimates - Trek #5 - $3.75 million - Passes $200 Mil

Well, I guess if people still want to find the movie, they will be able to do just that for a while longer.

Still pissed about the IMAX thing though. I'm sure there will be "adjustments" for the next movie.

Which I hope will make Iron Man numbers... :)

Re: Early Friday Estimates - Trek #5 - $3.75 million - Passes $200 Mil

the IMAX theatre at the Air and Space museum in Sterling, VA is going to be showing it again, sometime next month.

Re: Early Friday Estimates - Trek #5 - $3.75 million - Passes $200 Mil

Wow just keeps beating my expectations!

To be fair, I think we all had depressed expectations due to the poor performance of Nemesis.

I know I certainly did. Six months ago, I was still scratching my head over how they'd be willing to spend $150 million (4x the box office of Nemesis). I didn't think that any Trek movie could make that back.

I'm happy to have been wrong.

Same here. I didn't think Trek would make this much money. And I would've laughed in the face of any Paramount exec insisting otherwise.

Trek is doing great and I have no doubt that a sequel will do even better.

Re: Early Friday Estimates - Trek #5 - $3.75 million - Passes $200 Mil

Fun Fact of the Day:

Star Trek is less than $48 million away from becoming a billion dollar film franchise.

Re: Early Friday Estimates - Trek #5 - $3.75 million - Passes $200 Mil

Wow... Wouldn't it be great if it were this particular movie that pushed it over that milestone?

Might be close.

Re: Early Friday Estimates - Trek #5 - $3.75 million - Passes $200 Mil

It'll happen. Might take until the end of the year, but it'll happen.

Re: Early Friday Estimates - Trek #5 - $3.75 million - Passes $200 Mil

More reliable Friday numbers from BOM:

1. Up - $21.4
2. NATM2 - $7.6
3. Drag Me To Hell - $6.4
4. T4 - $5.1
5. Star Trek - $3.7
6. Angels & Demons - $3.4
7. Dance Flick - $1.6
8. Wolverine - $1.2
9. Ghosts of Girlfriends - $0.6
10. Obsessed - $0.2

Estimate for Trek is $200,350,000 after Friday

Re: Early Friday Estimates - Trek #5 - $3.75 million - Passes $200 Mil

So Trek will be down to Wolverine theater counts starting next week? :(

Well Wolverine should lose more next week too. But we'll see. It might lose less than what I said earlier, which now seems too high. I would expect to drop under 3000 though.
