Early District 9 Reviews

DISTRICT 9 is a landmark film that will heretofore be spoken of alongside such films as ALIENS, THE THING and 2001.
This film is SMART. Incredibly smart. There’s so much going on at all times, so much to process, and so many well constructed little set pieces in the background that everyone walks out having focused on a few particular aspects – and the after film discussion as a result is riveting. DISTRICT 9 is a film that begs to be discussed. Sure people will toss out “wow”s and “fucking awesome”s riddled with the occasional “how great were those special effects”, but that’s all before they begin grilling one another on what they thought about the aliens, the ending, the way the government reacted, the socio-political commentary, the small touches, the death scenes…hell, the brutality. This film is unflinching. It is harsh. And it’s going to send people in the lobby a little shell shocked and dying to talk about it.
Bottom Line: A genuinely original science fiction film that grabs you immediately, not letting go until the final shot.
Combining the very best of the postwar sci-fi movies with their trenchant political undertones and pulse-pounding dynamism and contemporary movie technology that can blend aliens seamlessly into a realistic human world of urban and moral decay, "District 9" flirts with greatness.
Interesting, this could be the sleeper for 2009.

Kind of has a Half-Life 2 feel to it......looks very good. Definitely going to see it.

It's only a handful of reviewers so far, but the trailers have looked very promising, and I'm certainly excited for it. Between this and Moon (which I'll be seeing this week), it might turn out to be a smarter summer than I expected.

I'm really, really interested in seeing this. And finding out that the aliens are fully CGI, and not practical effects--well, color me surprised. ESPECIALLY finding out this thing was made for just $30mil.... WOW.

i am really impressed with the 'look' and visual style that the film has. i'm really looking forward to see in it in two weeks.

I've been looking forward to this ever since I saw Alive in Joburg. It's just a taste of Neill Blomkamp can do with virtually no budget. If District 9 is half as intelligent as it looks we are in for a real treat.

Good to hear. I'm beginning to think that this will be a lot like Children of Men, but with aliens. Considering Children of Men is one of my favorite films, this is only good news. :D

I just read somewhere that the budget was only $30 million. Anyone else read that?

Hard to believe you can get great Fx for that kind of money, but the Fx is supposed to be really good. I'm definitely looking forward to it.

I hope the reviews are accurate, because so far the different trailers I have seen make it look only a few steps up from the shitty Transformers movies, making me not want to see it.
