Has anyone seen the footage that was included in the Best Buy season 3 set as an exclusive? I havent been able to find anything online and no one's really talking about it here. I'd be really interested to see what it looks like.

Someone posted a screencap of the ship in the TNG Season 3 Bluray topic. You might want to go over that again.

Figure I'd ask here since that thread is monstrous but thanks anyway.

I used the thread search option to find it for you. Pretty quick too.

Very glad they went with the beautiful E-D model instead.

has anyone gotten a hold of the cgi e-d tests?

All the CGI in that Best Buy feature are based on the Enterprise-refit in Star Trek III. There was no Enterprise-D design even established at the point the digital effects in the feature were produced.

I was shown that CG test when I visited the TNG art department in 1990; I was stunned, given the era and context.

The whole test, IIRC, consisted of several passes by the TMP Enterprise, rendered with differing levels of detail, and a number of simple renders showing various kinds of movement and framing that could be accomplished using CG.

I was pretty impressed when I watched the Best Buy special feature. The results they were able to achieve using 1980s technology is pretty amazing.

Is this footage available anywhere on Youtube? I would pay for it but as I don't reside in the US I don't get the option to buy from "Bestbuy".

I would like to see this footage too. It was one of the features I had been looking forward to on Season 3. Quite annoyed that they made it an exclusive.

Yeah, just looking at that screencap and the short clip on StarTrek.com amazed me - I had no idea they could get that high qulaity back in the day.

Don't know if it was pre-Probert or concurrent with, but Syd Mead mentioned (I think this was in a STAR TREK THE MAG interview, possibly the TMP-DE issue) being approached to design the new Ent for TNG early on. Pretty sure this was while they were considering doing the exteriors via CG (Peter Lauritson mentioned CG ship tests in CINEFEX 37 - maybe this was part of that?)

If you look at THE LAST STARFIGHTER, there are a few shots of the Gunstar that look pretty damn amazing with respect to dynamic range lighting and shadows. If they'd had another month or six weeks, supposedly they'd've been able to put motion blur into everything, and IMO that might have changed history in the way they'd hoped to do.
