Obviously there has been for many years optical drives that wont damage the CD while its spinning, so its not like its so cutting edge technology that it could not be incorporated into a console that's been proven to be prone to disc scratching.

But I have to admit, it was damned tempting. My buddy and I went down to the BB over the lunch hour and they said they thought they might have them in the stores by Friday evening. He's in the market right now for a 360 and is chomping at the bit to get this new model.

I wish, but in reality the booth babes seem incredibly disinterested in it. They stand there with their heads at 90° while the guys look at their boobs while pretending to be looking at the DS.
From what I am reading, DS games will work in the 3DS, but not vice-versa. I hope I am reading it wrong.
There's no way 3DS games will be backwards compatible with the DS. The graphics chip is clearly better in the 3DS and it's got motion sensors in it, it'd be like expecting DS games to run on the GBA or 360 games to run on the original XBox and it's a completely unrealistic expectation.
