E3 2009 Discussion thread HOLY SHIT MONKEY ISLAND IS BACK

Crackdown 2?!?!? OH HELL YES!!!!! That is my all time favorite pure fun game!!! I was so pissed there wasn't a sequel! Is there any solid information on it? New features, etc?

I'm really looking forward to Crackdown 2, Left 4 Dead 2 (PC version of course) and Alan Wake (PC version most likely). Epic's Metroid ripoff looks interesting, but for some reason it didn't look like it would be fun so I'll wait for a demo. I did like the glitch at the end where he was standing on air, reminds me of when that happened at the E3 Assassin's Creed demo where a guy was floating after being killed.

Natal seems like an interesting concept but I don't know how well it will work (when the showed off the avatar moving when the guy did it reminded me of when Sony showed off the sixaxis at E3 and it barely worked with the Warhawk demo), and I doubt I'll ever get one. Milo also seems interesting, but again I doubt I would ever get it, and I imagine most of what we saw in the demo was pre scripted since it was only in development for 3 months.

Ohcrap, I totally didn't realize that the new Monkey Island stuff was coming from Telltale. That just made it 50 times more awesome.

I cannot wait for Mass Effect 2 and Knights of the Old Republic MMO game.

Fucking Molyneux... he's got me hyped AGAIN. :p

He's very good at that. Of course, he's also very good at delivering products that are interesting at first and leave you desperate to like them before you realize that it is, in fact, rather dissatisfying.

Yeah. Well, Fable 2 was as close as he got to fulfilling his promises.

As for SW: TOR. Still bitter that we're not getting a real game. Finish the goddamn trilogy and then do your stupid MMO junk!

An MMO has the potential of being a far far better experience than a single game. As they said, it is like they are making KOTOR 3, 4, 5, etc... I think the fact that Bioware is involved with this will make it an entirely new MMO experience.

That line pissed me off more than anything else.

You can't tell a story in an MMO. Yeah, people talk about WoW lore and blah blah blah, but even looking at the new Trailer - where's Revan or Exile? Carth or Bastila? MAYBE that droid is T3, but what are the chances of you having T3 in your party when everyone playing the game probably wants their own T3 too?
It's going to be generic people doing generic fetch quests making generic binary moral choices. Maybe it'll look and play fine, but as a story experience it's not going to even come close to Mass Effect, let alone KoTOR1 or 2.

And the other thing is that it's BioWare Austin... and the major writers who set up KoTOR are off in Edmonton doing Dragon Age and Mass Effect 2. So really, who knows what the writing will be like anyway?

I know people like MMOs and they have their own unique qualities. EVE Online can't exist as a single player game. That's fine.
But that's not what I'm looking for in a KoTOR sequel. I don't want to see five thousand "R3v4n-is-l337" characters running around saving the universe by collecting five Ewok furs for the grand Wookie.

Your argument essentially is "you can't tell a story in an MMO because no one has done it before." The fact that there's no KOTOR characters in that trailer doesn't prove anything at all... and even if none of those characters are in the actual game (which is likely considering the later timeframe) that still doesn't mean you can't tell a story.

You've already decided that it's going to be "generic people doing generic fetch quests making generic binary moral choices." Yeah, maybe it is. Maybe it isn't. Frankly there just hasn't been enough shown about the game to say at this point... certainly not enough to get outraged over.

Its true, you can't flat out say that the story in KOTOR the MMORPG is going to suck. Its possible they will be able to make a good story for it. If all other games out there show one thing though, MMORPGs just dont give you the same level of story that you would get in a regular one. They can pull a coup and I would be happy if they did, but I wont hold my breath

My point really is just lets not prejudge a game that we barely know anything about. Once we know about it, then we can say that it sucks :p

I'm just still outraged because the game essentially kills any chance of the original story being finished whatsoever.

At this point, I'd take a freaking Darkhorse comic if that was the only way it could be done. Let Chris Alverone finish Alpha Protocol/Fallout Vegas then pay him to write KoTOR3 Electric Boogaloo fanfiction.

I mean, as for the MMO itself, I don't really care either way. Maybe they'll manage to pull off something with the gaming impact of Eve Online, the accessibility of WoW and the storytelling of like Shadow of the Colossus and I'll be the guy who has 12 accounts and sits in his house all day. I just don't see that happening... in fact, I sense a repeat of Star Wars Galaxies.

Actually, you can tell a story in an MMO when you have cinematics. They have said they were doing that. They have said it will all be voice acted as well. Exactly, why do you not think they can do the same sort of things that you see in a single player game in an MMO? They have also talked about interaction with NPCs and dialogue chains. This is Bioware we are talking about. I think you have a certain preconception of what MMOs are.

As far as Revan and other characters, for one thing this takes place a significant amount of time AFTER the events of KOTOR 2. And for another thing, it is way too early to be complaining about not seeing characters from previous KOTOR games. I think it highly UNLIKELY that Bioware would not have references or quests that didnt involve previous characters in some form or fashion.

I think you should keep an open-mind. Bioware has never produced a MMOG so you have no real basis for your conjectures.

Also, your concerns about running into other players tagging around with the same companions as you doesnt even have to be an issue. They could use instancing or even phased instancing (where you can be in the same place but see something entirely different then another player).

I'm with firehawk on the whole TOR issue. I'd really, really rather see a single-player sequel to the first two games that completes that story.

That said, this is BioWare we're talking about, and they've been saying over and over again how story has never been a strong point in MMOs, and how they intend to change that. And Drew Karpyshyn (lead writer on KotOR and ME) is at BioWare Austin now, working on TOR. So maybe it'll be decent.
