E3 2009 Discussion thread HOLY SHIT MONKEY ISLAND IS BACK

Twilight

Vice Admiral
Admiral
E3 starts in LA tomorrow!

Until we actually have a concrete announcement to talk about, what are your predictions?

My number one hope? A teaser trailer and an actual release date for Half Life 2 Episode 3

Re: E3 2009 Discussion thread

Anything good on deck for the Wii this year?

Re: E3 2009 Discussion thread

Grand Theft Mario? :p

I've never seen a console with such a disproportionate number of extremely crappy titles. Of course, what do you expect when Wii Music is considered one of their top titles?

Re: E3 2009 Discussion thread

There's nothing officially from Nintendo yet that I'm aware of, but there's been some 3rd party stuff announced. And of course lots of unsourced rumors (lots of people seem to be expecting a new Zelda game with support for that Motion+ thing).

Here's the conference schedule, though there's already been a bunch of leaks (poor Sony)... most of the big gaming sites are going to have live streams:

Monday June 1st, 2009
Microsoft: 10:30 AM PT
Electronic Arts: 2:00 PM PT
Ubisoft: 5:00 PM PT

Tuesday June 2nd, 2009
Nintendo: 9:00 AM PT
Sony: 11:00 AM PT

Wednesday June 3rd, 2009
Square Enix: 11:00 AM PT
Konami: 3:00 PM PT

Re: E3 2009 Discussion thread

I doubt we'll see anything on Half-Life 2: Episode Three. I want to, but I don't see it happening. Valve's motto appears to be "the more you watch the pot, the more it won't boil." I'm sure Valve will have a presence, but it will probably be in the vein of Portal 2 and some new Left 4 Dead levels.

I think we'll see a pretty big blowout on The Beatles: Rock Band, including at least a partial set list. I fully expect Alan Wake to make an appearance, too, just as proof that Remedy hasn't fallen into the sea. Max Payne 3, as well. Mass Effect 2 and Hitman 5 are almost guaranteed.

There's also the big Microsoft announcement -- the motion camera? The company is being ultra-tight-lipped, even moreso than usual, so it's probably going to be something big.

Sony has the potential to knock this one out of the park, but I expect the company's main focus to be on the PSP Go. I do expect an announcement that L.A. Noire will be a PS3 exclusive (Rockstar confirmed last year that one of its upcoming projects was exclusive to the PS3, and we've seen almost nothing of L.A. Noire since it was first announced).

Re: E3 2009 Discussion thread

I think there will be announcements of sequels of sequels of sequels of sequels and the game will cost 120 million to make, cost $70 at a store and there will be 1 hour of playable game and 15 hours of movies. Unless it's a Square game, than there will be 4 minutes of gameplay.

Re: E3 2009 Discussion thread

I'm really hoping to see a new Zelda game come onto the radar. Its been a while since the last console one came out.

I'm also curious to see if those Metal Gear Solid 4 + Oxide rumors are true

Re: E3 2009 Discussion thread

Yes, please Nintendo. Give us something juicier than another casual Wii gimmick game.

Please. For the love of god.

Re: E3 2009 Discussion thread

I think the Sony conference pretty much got leaked to hell.

Things like PSP Go, Team ICO, MAG, Ratchet and a possible MGS announcement.

Re: E3 2009 Discussion thread

Don't forget the potential PS3 slim (and I'm still wondering how in the hell such a thing can work without generating enough heat to cause a thermonuclear reaction). Sony's internal security pretty much went to the dogs over the last couple of weeks.

I'll have you know, buster, that I'm proud of the variety of quality games my company has made for Nintendo, such as Wii Fly Swatter, Wii Jump Rope (with a no-fail mode), Virtual Tooth Brush and our new sports game Wii Everybody Wins.

Re: E3 2009 Discussion thread

Can I go out on a limb here and say that, despite my MAJOR initial excitement for the Wii, it's been a total snoozefest throughout almost its entire lifetime.

Frankly, the motion controls, while fine on paper, simply don't work that well. They're fun for about 20 minutes, then it gets old. My favorite game for the Wii is Mario Kart, which I play with a Gamecube controller. The stupid steering wheel is a gimmick and it's useless.

And I hate to be shallow, but the visuals the thing can produce look like they're from 1998. That's fine so long as your games are innovative and consistently entertaining - but they're just not, in general (there are some major exceptions).

All IMO of course. I know families and younger kids get a lot of fun out of it.

But yeah, Nintendo's E3 press conference this year should make for a great nap time.

Re: E3 2009 Discussion thread

If Nintendo announces F-Zero GX2 or Pilotwings I may have to consider purchasing another Wii, having sold mine some time ago.

I don't think that's really so much a limb as it is an entire tree :p

On the other hand, while I haven't even turned my Wii on for nearly a year, Nintendo is still making gobs of money. So from a business perspective, it's hard to fault them. At least there's the Metroid Prime trilogy rerelease to look forward to anyway...

I believe we only know of 3 Nintendo games post July: Wii Sports Resort, Metroid Prime Trilogy and Zelda Spirit Tracks. Nintendo is keeping their fall lineup close to their chest.

Honestly how many casual Wii gimmick games have Nintendo published? Wii Sports (free, also can be pretty enjoyable for hardcore gamers), Wii Play (though basically a $10 game), Big Brain Academy, Endless Ocean (though some hardcore gamers like it), Wii Fit, Wii Music, and Animal Crossing (again some hardcore gamers also like it).

Nintendo has released a lot more "hardcore" games on the Wii then "casual" games. And typically the "casual gimmick games" Nintendo makes are typically pretty good.

Have you been skipping the great third party games that have come out over the past year or so. I've really enjoyed de Blob, Okami, Boom Blox, No More Heroes, House of the Dead: Overkill and Tales of Symphonia Dawn of the New World (though it had a really annoying main character.

I've also heard good things about Madworld (which I recently bought but haven't gotten around to playing), Klonoa (ditto), Boom Blox Bash Party and Deadly Creatures.

Plus I'm really looking forward to the upcoming 3rd party lineup, it seems like the Wii is getting the best third party support on a Nintendo console since the SNES. Some people seem to discount current and upcoming 3rd party support since there aren't many FPSs, but I'm happy all the shooters I play on the PC and 360, so I really don't need too many more on the Wii (besides lightgun games, need more of those).

Re: E3 2009 Discussion thread

So looking forward to this E3 and I will be looking out for the following...

* Mass Effect 2
* Assassins Creed 2
* Mafia 2
* GTA DLC (2)
* Operation Flashpoint 2
* Star Trek Online
* GRAW 3 and hopefully some news on the next Rainbow Six game

Metal Gear Solid 3 or 4 would be great on the 360 since I played neither but looks like the new MGS teaser is for the PSP...WASTE WASTE WASTE

I'm sure Mass Effect 2 will have a pretty big E3 presence, but Bioware recently announced that Dragon Age will be coming out this October so I doubt we'll see Mass Effect 2 this year unless Bioware wants to compete with itself. :( I would buy them both if ME2 came out in November, but my guess is we'll see it come out early next year.

As for Assassin's Creed 2 I really hope they make this one less repetitive then the first.

Mass Effect 2 is early 2010.
