E3 2008 - Discuss!

Holy shit. I just saw the Nintendo press conference... that was just awful. Sadly I bet wii music fly's off the shelves while quality games collect dust.

Nintendo. No F-Zero, Pilotwings, Pikmin, Starfox, or new IP that I can bring myself to care about. The future looks bleak. :(

new Pikmin being made

And just when the audience thought that was it, Miyamoto added, "We're making Pikmin."
He didn't reveal when it'll be out, unamazingly.

Yeah, caught that a little while after I posted earlier, seems Nintendo's corpse is still twitching. Now they just need to announce that Sega is developing F-Zero GX2 and my faith will be restored. ;)

Not E3-related (it'll be at PAX and Quakecon) but Multiwinia (or Darwinia+ for the X360 crowd) is looking damn fine at the moment. :techman:

So everyone's problem with Bioware doing a KoTOR MMO is that Bioware seems to not be doing KoTOR 3?

Or is there something else?

I want a true sequel. This MMO will be anything but.

Chris Avellone pretty much said that they're not working on a KoTOR project and the rumour is that the firings at LA last month basically stalled the KoTOR3 project for the second time since KoTOR2 launched. I hope there's still a game coming, but I kind of doubt it.

That said, at least Alpha Protocol looks like it'll be awesome. Maybe more so than Dragon Age.

i doubt sega will do fzero gx2, i recall reading that miyamoto wasn't happy with the last fzero game.

kotor mmo... maybe... story can still advance through mmo's, be it through quests or one time events. i am curious to see bioware break their story-telling formula... at least i hope they do.

Miyamoto is an idiot.

F-Zero GX was sublime, it remains the finest example of its genre in existence. For all that I'm looking forward to it, I doubt SCE Studio Liverpool's upcoming Wipeout HD can match it.

F-Zero will have to wake up pretty damn early in the mornin' to ever stand a chance of beating Wipeout. Why? 'cause I say so. Contender eliminated!

...that said, these are the only two franchises in the genre which are worth jack squat. Fatal Inertia? Please. Leave the futuristic racing to the adults, Koei.

^ Extreme-G III was very sharp also. Then, for XGRA, Acclaim took everything that was good about that game and threw it out the window. Then folded.

Hmm. I don't know if FFXIII becoming a multi-platform title, rather than a PS3 exclusive, should be that big of a shocker.

From what I've read over the last few years, game development expenses are skyrocketing, and it really doesn't make much financial sense for developers to limit themselves to one platform. Judging from the development issues FFXIII has been rumored/confirmed to have had, this rings doubly true — they probably had to go multi-platform in order to recoup their development costs and actually generate a profit.

Bottom line: Game titles exclusive to one platform are likely to become rarer in the future.

P.S. Heh. I guess I'm in the minority here, but I found the E3 information on the upcoming "Resistance 2" game to be quite fascinating. I'm looking forward to its release in November.

^ What did you find interesting about it? I saw only a little footage during Sony's presentation and it appeared to be a rather generic FPS to go on the pile with all the others.

Flower, by thatgamecompany for PSN, was the game that most caught my attention this year. For some reason it reminds me of sailing the oceans in The Wind Waker.

Bryan "Fragile Eagle" Intihar was sort of talking up the demo on the last 1up Yours. They aren't doing polished vertical slices to show off, so it'll all look average.

What's hilarious is that Ted Price almost died during that demo. He was almost killed by a flying... couch.

I think the biggest story of E3 will be the fact that Microsoft screwed over Bungie by changing the press conference and then the reveal plan. I'm guessing a GC reveal... or, god... maybe even PAX.

i actually think the bigger story of e3 is nintendo's press conference dissapointment.

the bungie thing, you need to look around to find out that an announcement wasnt made.

I'd go with the FFXIII on 360 thing as the biggest story of E3, given that it was the only real megaton of the show. As lame as Nintendo's conference was, Konami somehow managed to embarrass themselves even more.

Nintendo always disappoint, but the gaming world is too busy sucking its dick to notice.

Animal Crossing: City Folk looks suspiciously like Animal Crossing: Wild World, which looks suspiciously like Animal Forest GCN, which looks suspiciously like Animal Crossing N64. I'll still buy it, because it's fun, but they could've at least tried. I guess they figure their new audience hasn't played Animal Crossing before so it's okay to peddle the same game they've already sold us 2-3 times before.

WagglePlus is almost a 32X - a hardware peripheral required to by every Wiimote to play an as-yet unspecified number of games. And all because they lied through their teeth back in 06 about how worthless the Wii's motion controls really are. Who knew that shaking a phallic-shaped controller could be anything from waving a sword about to reloading a semi-automatic? But it's all good, because if you buy WiiSports Resort, where the omg amazing powerz of WagglePlus are demonstrated by your ability to approximate throwing a frisbee for your Mii's dog - a minigame that comprises 1/3 of this newest game - then you get one for free! Shame about your other Wiimotes: you'll need to buy extra dongles if you don't want them to be even more useless than they already are.

When I got my PS1 it came with a handy little disc titled 'Demo 1.' There were playable versions of Destruction Derby, Wipeout, Ridge Racer, Tohshinden, ESPN Extreme Sports, Loaded, and various other games and videos. It kept my young, poor, self occupied for ages and to this day represents better value than WiiSports and, almost certainly, WiiSports Resort.

And the less said about WiiMusic, the better. Having 60 instruments doesn't really mean a whole lot when all you do is wave your Wiimote around randomly. Just don't screw up, because....oh wait, the music keeps on playing anyway. Oops.

What a racket. Who are they trying to fool?

**shrug** I was a skeptical buyer of RFOM, came to enjoy it and, thus, pretty much dig any new info on R2.

Hmm. It's possible I'm also mixing up what was revealed in Sony's presentation with the R2 exclusive article in GamePro, which unveiled quite a chunk of info on the Chicago level in R2.

I'm a pretty picky buyer of games, so when one actually wins me over, I'm quite eager to follow developments in sequels and whatnot.
