DVD Screengrab software

http://kmplayer.en.softonic.com/

KMplayer does everything. Trust me, you'll never look back once you use it.
The automated screencap thingy is a godsend for animated gifs, and you can easily set it to cap every 10 seconds.

*yoink!*

Be EXTREMELY careful with this one. I downloaded that link and my computer locked up and crashed. When I got it running again, my anitvirus software warned me against using it.

^That's interesting. I've managed to purge all traces of it from my computer, but for some reason, the program's window will not leave my display screen. I can't shut it off, and several cold restarts have failed to remove it.

I have no idea what to do now.

I've been genuinely proud of being virus free for a long time. That program's been on my computer for a similarly long time, and I've never seen a problem yet.

(board crashes again)

System restore.

Nice av. Lincoln era White House?

I tried system restore. Didn't help.

And yeah, that's Lincoln's White House from 1863, I believe.

Go to Run, and type msconfig, select Selective Startup and then the Startup tab. Look for the program in question and uncheck it's box, then restart. That should keep it from starting up every time you boot up.

So, I just tried to use the capture system on KMPlayer, but I keep getting a message saying "Impossible to work at SuperSpeed mode, or there is no KMP transform filter." Has anyone else had this problem? And how can I fix it?

I remember seeing that before. This is from their forums:

The default behavior of connecting KMP video transform filter is a bit changed to improve the playback performance with general systems. RGB force option including video processing effects and captures would not work with HD videos by default even when you selected High Quality option from Advanced Video Menu.

If you want to always use KMP video transform filter to force the video effects, switch back to the previous condition. Refer to the screenshots below.

By default, KMP video transform filter is disabled when playing DVD due to the same reason. You can disable it in such case. Refer to the 2nd screenshot below.

The screens are slightly outdated, but the gist of it is the same.

I had the same issue and had to try several things (with help of the support forum) to finally get it working.

What you can first try is to turn the superspeed mode off: menu: video (advanced) -> uncheck superspeed mode.
You can try to enable the KMP transform filter; menu: preferences -> video processing -> condition (always use).

And if you have done that, then shut down KMPlayer, download this new codec and replace the existing one with it. Then restart KMPlayer and that should do it.

Edit: I forgot the second setting from Spiff's tips. But that still didn't do it for me cause the latest version/build had a problem with the codec. If you have version 2.9.1434 you will have to replace the codec as well.

VLC Player does it for free (VideoLAN). This is the only video viewing software one should use, IMO. It plays most everything (even without codecs).

There's also a much better software if you have the file in .avi form called VirtualDubMod. You can go frame by frame with the arrow keys with this software (Ctrl+1 copies the picture) and then I layer the frames in Adobe Photoshop Elements 5.0. This is what I use for my .gifs (see left).
I always use VirtualDubMod for capping - it accepts mpeg-1, mpeg-2 and VOB files as well as AVI. You can even access the VOB files of a DVD direct from the drive.

For long animated GIFs I tend to save out a cropped range as an uncompressed AVI which I load direct into ImageReady for editing. Groovy.

:D

I don't know what's wrong, then, because I did everything both of you suggested, and it's still giving me the same message.

Is it paused when you're trying to do the captures? I recall some people having problems with that. They just had to make sure the movie was playing when they started the captures.

Yeah, I noticed that when I looked through the KMP forums for help, but even when the video's playing I keep getting the message. SuperSpeed Mode is off, I downloaded that new codec, video transform filter is disabled, and the condition thing is set to "always use." So I don't know if I'm missing something or what...
