Dune - To Be Directed by Pierre Morel (Taken)

Perhaps this means we'll get the Sci-Fi Channel Original Miniseries version on Blu-Ray. As I rather like that version, that's all that it will take to count this version as a win. And if this latest version is, you know, good, all the better. But how will they possibly due the novel justice in less than six hours? Even the miniseries cut things out.

Exactly, Dune is such a complex novel that it can not be compressed into a two or three hour movie. That's the primary problem with the David Lynch movie, and I don't see how this movie can pull it off.

Robert Pattinson as Paul Atriedes
Carrie Ann Moss as Lady Jessica MILF
Liam Neeson as Duke Leto Atredies
Anthony Hopkins as Emperor Shaddam
George Wendt as Baron Harrkonnen
Seth Rogan as the Beast Rabban

Actually, Liam Neeson is an excellent choice for Duke Leto.

And then we roll dice to see which remaining character(s) will be changed into minority roles. :shifty:

Duncan Idaho will be a black man...because the character dies. Harry Lennix as either him or Gurney Halleck.
I thought Dune was awesome when it came out, it is a bit dated as to effects so it is time for a reboot.

My choices

Paul Atriedes - Chris Pine (heck why not)
Lady Jessica - Hally Barry
Duke Leto Atredies - Patrick Stewart(A nod to the old movie)
Emperor Shaddam - Terence Stamp
Barron Harrkonnen - Brian Cox
Duncan Idaho - Hugo Weaving
Gurney Halleck - James Marsters
Princess Irulan - Heather Graham
Feyd Rautha - David Boreanaz
Chani - Kiera Knightly
The Beast Rabban - Seth Rogan
Doctor Kynes - Bill Nighy
Yueh - Kenneth Branagh

Dune can be made a two-hour movie by streamlining the plot, pretty much. It's about a boy who gets screwed over, loses everything, and then finds himself with the Fremen and rides that wave to victory. Thing is, Lynch's film wants to be everything, or anyway it's a five hour film cut to a two hour length.

Though if Avatar could clock in at just under three hours, as well as the LOTR films sometimes going over that length, I think audiences could tackle a three-hour Dune epic and I see no reason why it shouldn't be that lengthly.

Not only did Lynch's film want to be everything in that two hour running time, it wanted to be some other things, too. The sonic guns? The strange Harkonnens? Surely other things that I am missing. Not the best way to streamline the novel. On top of that, I absolutely hate the color pallete. It's such an ugly movie for the most part.

There were some interesting touches (like the concept if not the execution of the sandworms having a triangular mouth), but I have to agree: it was very ugly. And using a giant turd for the Guild Navigator didn't help matters at all.

I just hate the colors. I absolutely loathe the gold overload with House Corrino (assuming I've got the Emperor's House right...it's been a while).

I thought the Harkonnens had a cool design in the Lynch film. Weird, yes, but cool. However, the Sardaukar were pretty damn lame. What were those things, radiation suits?

The Baron wasn't some deformed psychopath in the book, they were a ruthless and vicious band but not the lunatics we saw in the Lynch film.

Bingo. It's the one thing about the Lynch film that really rubs me the wrong way. The Baron needs to be, you know, menacing.

(I have a soft spot for Sting as Feyd, but then, who doesn't? 'I will kill you!')

The Harkonnen from the Scifi mini were far superior to those from the Lynch film.

Paul Atriedes - Chris Pine (heck why not)

Because he's way too old to be believed as 15 years old.

Did you think Kyle MacLachlan looked 15 in the Lynch film?

No, in fact I complained that he looked too old when I first saw the Lynch film.

Alec Newman from the mini didn't really look 15 either, but he did seem to be in the same age bracket as most other actors who play teenagers in TV and movies so I overlooked that.

Well, yeah, but, Ian McNeice. I'd be happy to see him play the role again in the new version. He was just about perfect, which is probably why they jumped through so many hoops to bring him back in the second miniseries (sort of).
