The Spice Diver fan edit of 1984 Dune is also available on youtube, which is somewhat unusual for a fanedit. As of today, however, it hasn't been removed. It's actually the best edit I've seen of the 1984 version of Dune. It's not without flaws, but it's a really good cut, IMHO. I'm not sure of the legality of posting a link to it here so I won't, but I found it almost without effort.

It was kind of cool, but unless it was a figure of speech, the idea of 'a black sun' was a bit of nonsense. I could definitely see different star types and atmospheric compositions making for interesting atmospheric lighting effects.
Geidi prime supposed to be so polluted and smog filled its near toxic.

I feel these two films are a very good cinematic take on the book and it's themes. It pretty much left out a lot of the intrigue of other aspects of the Imperium (which I actually don't mind) - like the Spacing Guild (and yes, the film mentions the fact that without the Spice, interstellar navigation would be impossible); but they were also a great motivating factor for the Emperor to take out Duke Leto and especially Paul Atreides. In the film, the Emperor's motivation is that Leto is popular with The Landsraad and could ascend the Throne, but as he "rules with his Heart..." the current Emperor sees him as weak.

It also doesn't really do a lot with the Mentats or the fact that aside from one world (Ix) - computers and AI tech are outlawed and non-existent but in the film the Arrakis planetary tracking system the Harkonnen have appears rather high tech for the Dune Universe <--- But these things don't negatively impact the story being told (IMO). I think they did a good job with the portrayal of the Fremen and the Fremen leader Stilgar too.

I love the portrayal of the Baron Harkonnen, Raban and Feyd <--- FINALLY, screen versions of these characters that IMO capture the book versions a lot better. And they really did a good job with showing what manipulators the Bene Gesserit Order is.

IDK if they'll attempt Children Of Dune or any of the other sequels, but if they do, I'd be interested to see it.

(I hadn't been following any production reports and didn't really look at any trailers; so when I saw Christopher Walken as the Emperor sitting on the throne, I guess I'm a weird Nerd, because the first thought that came into my head was: "More CowBell."

;))

I think (I may be wrong) that some computers are OK. It's just any sort of advanced AI. Different planets will have different tolerances, some won't even tolerate a calculator while others like Ix push the limits to the extreme and even break them.

Its fits the Harkonons would do the bare minimum the law requires and likely use some human computer interface to get around AI.

I would say the casting was the best of any Dune adaption.

I really can't find a fault beyond the weird gender swap of Liat Keynes in the first movie (though it's not a major gripe).

ian mcneice is still my favorite Baron for capturing the sheer greed and gluttony while providing flare. But stellan skarsgård still does an amazing job.

I might see one movie every five years that I consider a masterpiece. This is it. Just an absolutely brilliant adaptation of the source material. Epic sound and visuals. Brilliant casting.
I feel like i've seen two (new) movies in the last 5 years that fit that description.
This one, I feel like i have to see it a few more times before i really decide how i feel about it.

That's correct. Machines/computers are allowed. Machines/computers that imitate a human mind are not. Hence tech like interstellar travel, Ornithopters, lasguns, shields, film books, stillsuits- but no AI. The proscription runs deep, so most avoid anything close to what a thinking machine might look like, but places like Ix & Richese tread a lot closer to the line.

Also, we are only exposed to the nobility and the extreme destitute of one planet. We have no idea what tech the average dude walking around on the average planet might have. The royal houses don't use computers because they have Mentats, which are so far beyond modern super computers that computers are useless. We don't see the average dude on a random planet, he might have the Ixian version of a 90's Dell, since he sure can't afford a mentat. There must be a market for the Ixian and Richese devices.

I've got to go to one of the subtitles on the screen showings with my hard-of-hearing wife before it's too late. Anybody want to watch three toddlers?

So I've been reading some tweets online about how the language was changed in the movie from the book ("Ya Hya Chouhada" being the major one) but that it was basically translated back into Arabic. That Ya Hya Chouhada is the French Algerian pronunciation of what is said in the movie in Arabic.

Dunno how true it is but ran across a few threads on it.

At least someone acknowledged it. I still think they should have just used ya hya chouhada.

Though chouhada is closer to martyrs in Arabic.

The phrase doesn't completely parse out in Arabic the way Herbert used it.

What I read were Algerian & non Algerian arabic speakers saying Chouhada is the French Algerian transliteration while Shuhada is English transliteration but it's the same word. And Frank just says "fighters" instead of "martyrs".

Again, I don't vouch for it, just a popular discussion that showed up in my feed.

I enjoyed this take on how the Dune novels are so frequently misunderstood and why this so annoyed Frank Herbert. His son didn't apparently get the message either.

Interesting. I wish I knew Herbert's thinking in his translation. The translation seems based upon a variant of Arabic I can't quite suss out. Algeria uses a dialect of Arabic, Maghrebi, so trying to find the way to get to the pronunciation has been interesting.

It's partly his own fault, he didn't do a very good job showing the dark side to Paul becoming the Fremen Messiah and the horrors of the Jihad in the first book.
