Dune 2018 (19,20,21...)

So I went to book the tickets to see it with someone else this weekend and the first theatre had its IMAX shows sold out (well not entirely - they had the terrible front seats left).

Had to switch to a second city and look there. They had tons of seats. Weird. Hopefully the IMAX will all sell out again.

Was it a proper 70mm laser IMAX? We don’t have any of those in Scotland sadly

Yes it's real IMAX. It's the best screen/viewing experience for about 500 kilometres in any direction I believe. I actually worked at the theatre when they installed it, at the time it was the 17th busiest theatre in North America, so it got the real IMAX install. Same screen as I saw it on last week.

Of course I also had a PTSD related anxiety attack going back to it last week for the first time in years, fingers crossed it doesn't happen again this week.

I feel weird for saying this but I thought the film was just OK. I know I should like it more but I didn't. I thought it had pacing issues. It felt dragged out in places with lots of people standing around chewing scenery. I like the characters, I am interested in the story and it's a very beautifully made film. But it didn't completely work for me. A tighter film might have but my feeling throughout was "why am I not liking this more?". I loved Blade Runner 2049. But this, not so much. I did watch it on the big screen for anyone wondering. I didn't feel I was the only person there who felt it long. There was a lot of people shifting in seats, you could feel it in the cinema that people weren't with the film.

$15.5 mil this weekend. 62% drop. Pretty good for a movie available streaming, they're usually more frontloaded as everyone who wants to see them goes opening weekend and everyone else watches them at home.

I was planning to watch it again this weekend but I'm in the middle of moving for a new job and helping with the local election right before the move, so it didn't work out. Hopefully next weekend or so.

I just got home from my second viewing. Definitely less busy but not empty. A lot of happy people walking out. A couple idiots on their phonesnes though this time.

That's too bad. I'm sorry it didn't work for you.

I remember at my screening, there was a group of three guys sitting a few rows down from me who kept pulling their phones out and texting throughout the movie. It's true what they say, the light from a phone's screen can be very distracting in darkened theatre.

Well the second weekend is a box office disaster. Glad they rushed approval on those sequel.

No, it's not. It's a 62% drop. That's decent for a film that released same day digitally during a pandemic, it even beats Black Widow.

Yup, that shit drives me insane. I usually don't see it in front of me, but it's very distracting when it's someone in my own row and I see it in my peripherals.
