Dune 2018 (19,20,21...)

Meh, Brian Herbert called the 2000 miniseries "the definitive adaptation" back in the day and before that he tried to make his Dune novels consistent with the Lynch movie.

I mean, the miniseries and the children of dune mini series are amazing. A few things get changed, and the budget wasn't always there, but it was very faithful in general, had good acting, and in my opinion they are the best possible adaptations that can probably be made, outside of spending more money for effects. It also didn't take anything from the shity Lynch movie, as opposed to this film which seems to be based more on the movie then anything. As Far as I'm concerned, there is no reason to adapt the story again because the miniseries exists, which is why I'm not really angry at this movie. What does it matter if they keep making shitty Dune movies when I can always watch the definitive adaptations of the 3 good Dune books already?

I think Id care more if there was more I was interested in seeing adapted, but everything after Children of Dune would be almost impossible to adapt, both because it gets ridiculous and it would probably cost too much. Actually, I would like to see the Brian Herbert and Kevin Anderson mid-quels adapted, I think they were called Winds of Dune and Paul of Dune? I actually really enjoyed those.

Honestly, I think that the last 2 Frank Herbert Dune books are worse than any of the Brian Herbert and Kevin Anderson stuff. Heretics of Dune and Chapterhouse Dune are absolute garbage and also weirdly X-rated, for reasons I'll never understand.

Have you seen Arrival or Blade Runner 2049? Seeing either one of those movies should relieve any concerns you might have about whether or not Denis Villeueve (I think I spelled that right), can pull off a good adaptation of Dune.

Villeneuve ;)

I agree, he is a very good director and capable to make interesting movies, even if they are at blockbuster levels ( which are usually overloaded with CGI, One Liners and near non stop action).

He's one of the few where just hearing the name i was confident we would get a good Dune movie and it seems he has a passion for the project that matches his talent which is always a good sign.

Still bummed we will have to wait until late next year to see it, fingers crossed the studios will change the schedule again if the Covid crisis improves until spring/summer.

Another thing to keep in mind is that even if there are a few similar visuals, Villeneuve and David Lych are very, very, very different directors, so the new movie will have a very different tone and style.

There's no way on Salusa Secundus that the Sisterhood show is based on any of the novels. The Sisterhood/Mentat/Navigators trilogy relies far too heavily on the trilogy before it and would not be very accessible.

I mean, it literally is. It's a fact. I don't know why you're arguing it?

I'm hoping it's just using the name and is entirely its own creation but at the very least it is, officially, an adaptation of that novel.

Villeneuve and the cast are pissed according to the NYT because they had backend deals on Dune and did not receive $10 mil payoffs like Gadot and Jenkins did for WW84. Which is why you don't see the Dune cast/Villeneuve championing the same day streaming like you do Gadot/Jenkins.

Link to non-NYT article so those without subscriptions can read. Also talks about how the DGA is discussing a boycott of WB:

There's another article floating around, and I'm not going to link to it, because it's clickbait, criticizing McFarlane Toys and Warner Bros over the lack of a Chani figure, suggesting that the reason is sexism.

Of course, they also recognise in the article that Zendaya sold her image rights to Barbie prior to being cast in Dune and that just maaaayyyyyyybbbbeeeeeee that's why there isn't a Chani figure.

So, yeah. Clickbait.

So basically, the entire rest of the entertainment industy is pissed a WB right now. You'd think they would have checked with people or worked out more deals before making such a massive move.

Seems obvious to everyone who isn't a multimillionaire executive at an international conglomerate.

It kind of amazes me at times how clueless the the higher ups at some of these big companies are. You know this had to go through several lays of the company before the final OK, and you'd think someone, somewhere would have said "hey, wait a minute, maybe we should check with the people who made these movies and try to work out something so they're OK with this". Someone really shit the bed on this one.

They obviously knew that it would be enough of a shitstorm that they paid off Gadot and Jenkins before announcing the WW84 change. I don't know why they didn't talk to any one else with any other film, other than maybe they got some internal tracking showing how much money they were going to make off streaming that they don't have to share with the theater chains, celebrated with a lot of cocaine, and immediately announced they were doing the same with every other movie while still high.

Is warners just the distributors or did they pony up some of the cash for making the films?

If they're the former then it's easier for Nolan et al to make a noise but if they're the money bags it becomes harder because the studio would looking to get it's money back and anyone else's viewpoint is irrelevant.

I think they are the production company on most of these, but Legendary covered 75% of the budget for Dune and Godzilla vs Kong.

They're called "the suits" or "the idiots in charge" for very good reason...

It is exactly for this reason i believe it was done at all and that's because of a cold, emotionless corporate decision. They know the "creatives" (with very few exceptions) don't have any power because executing any power they might have such a walking away from a production company aor boycotting them ultimately cuts into their desire to make movies when said companies simply stop to bankroll their projects and i think the studios have much larger stamina to stomach such a loss (there's always some up and coming director/actor who are willing to do anything just to get their name out).

So they probably did the math and decided to test something in 2021 and see how it works out - everybody else is freaking out but ultimately they are all dependent on studious producing content that everybody else relies on to make their own profits.

They obviously knew that it would be enough of a shitstorm that they paid off Gadot and Jenkins before announcing the WW84 change. Probably and it could be that especially Gadot and Jenkins have proven that their threats aren't empty (Gadot god Brett Ratner removed as producer when she threatened not to do WW84 at all) so they threw some money at them and it apparently worked. However Hollywood is not some monolith where everybody works together tightly as a group - if all A Listers would agree to follow Gadot and threaten never to work on an WB production again their plans would be dead in the water, since that didn't happen WB figured they could pay off the occasional A Lister, which would still be cheaper or less loss causing than to continue to wait.
