Duncan Jones' Mute

Mojochi

Finally got around to watching Duncan Jones' passion piece, Netflix movie Mute. I'm not going to say it was bad, but it does not come anywhere near to impressing me like Moon did. I didn't even like it as much as Source Code. It's just exorbitant & trying too hard, needs like 20 minutes trimmed, (Too much meandering with stylized stuff that didn't matter) & oh brother do Paul Rudd & Justin Theroux just cannonball it with hackery.

Alexander Skarsgård is actually pretty good, as was the actress limitedly playing his girlfriend. I seem to have this recurring opinion of Skarsgård, that believes he's a much better actor than is reflected in the major motion picture roles he gets (Thinking of Tarzan)

The direction itself & cinematography are solid enough, as it should be for what they must've spent (I think 50 million). The story seems like a labor of love for Jones, but honestly, the ending is not only underwhelming, but it's also pretty damned predictable. A lot of it is stereotypical, borrowed, procedural, or awkwardly placed

There's even a cameo from Sam Rockwell, that actually informed me that this was a Duncan Jones picture, & in doing so made this even more of a let down for me, because I really do love Moon

That cameo even sets it in the same universe of Moon.

It is a hot goddamn mess. Mostly entertaining but felt like something written by a very young storyteller who was more interested in being edgy and weird than actually telling a good story. With a couple more passes on the script I could absolutely see it being a worthy successor, but as it is I can only imagine it will simply disappear into the unwatched obscure abyss of Netflix's streaming library.

I liked the movie, but it's not nearly as good as Moon or Source Code. I actually felt the Moon tie-ins were distracting because I really wanted to know what was going to happen to the Sams. There was a reference to Gerty too, so I wanted to know what happened to it as well. I really think that Jones was more concerned with building the world than telling a story set in it, which is a shame because it was an interesting story and I wish it had been developed more.

This was a movie set in the future for no reason at all. It could have been set in the present and the story would not change at all.

Yeah, pretty much.

I think he was trying to make a new Blade Runner. But between his initial dream of making the movie and it's release, we got a new Blade Runner movie.

I only made it about a quarter of the way through before I gave up on it. Yeah, it's definitely a muddled mess. The concept sounds amazing, and it even looks great, but it was quite blah. It's like the story got lost among the visuals.

What was the Gerty reference? I actually perked up when I saw Sam. It might have been the only thing that interested me in the whole movie. I certainly would want to know how Sam coming back affected things

At the bowling alley, there's a news tinker that mentions Gerty testifying in the court case with the Sams. It was a blink and you'll miss it thing.

It's pretty bad. This never gets a budget without Netflix involvement. The acting is fine but the story is hot garbage and it's about 40 minutes too long.
