Finally got around to watching Duncan Jones' passion piece, Netflix movie Mute. I'm not going to say it was bad, but it does not come anywhere near to impressing me like Moon did. I didn't even like it as much as Source Code. It's just exorbitant & trying too hard, needs like 20 minutes trimmed, (Too much meandering with stylized stuff that didn't matter) & oh brother do Paul Rudd & Justin Theroux just cannonball it with hackery.
Alexander Skarsgård is actually pretty good, as was the actress limitedly playing his girlfriend. I seem to have this recurring opinion of Skarsgård, that believes he's a much better actor than is reflected in the major motion picture roles he gets (Thinking of Tarzan)
The direction itself & cinematography are solid enough, as it should be for what they must've spent (I think 50 million). The story seems like a labor of love for Jones, but honestly, the ending is not only underwhelming, but it's also pretty damned predictable. A lot of it is stereotypical, borrowed, procedural, or awkwardly placed
There's even a cameo from Sam Rockwell, that actually informed me that this was a Duncan Jones picture, & in doing so made this even more of a let down for me, because I really do love Moon
