I want a Trek character to reference a sci-fi show/movie that we all know. Since Trek is kind of supposed to be in out future, then all these TV shows and movies will exist in their past (well, except one franchise)
Maybe Trip could've said that the next movie night would be Return of the Jedi or something. Or Scotty would say something about Han never having this problem.
Any other ideas?

Well, maybe they should refer to contemporary (24th century) fiction. When was the last time you heard someone make a reference to The Time Machine or 20,000 Leagues Under The Sea in casual conversation?

I think they should mention sci fi that hasn't been made yet. When Attack of the Killer Thing from Planet 9 is released in 2021, everyone is going to love it....

Trip mentioned several Sci-Fi movies. And I think it is an unwritten rule that anything related to Star Wars are not to be spoken on any Trek production.

We've had references to Moby Dick and Shakespeare so i don't see why jules verne shouldn't get a mention.He's not owned by a movie/tv co. is he. I also think a H.A.L. reference when messing with an obstinate computer would be great.As t.v. doesn't exist in the star trek future but literature does i think Arthur c clark and verne would survive.

I think the closest thing we ever got might be from DS9's "Trials and Tribble-ations". It's not a character referencing a show, but the names of the two temporal investigators (Dulmer and Lucsley) are a clear reference to X-Files.

This brings up one of my favorite temporal conundrums. Since Mission: Impossible existed in the Star Trek universe, and Leonard Nimoy appeared on both shows, then we know that Nimoy as an actor existed in the Star Trek universe. It therefore follows that "Star Trek", the TV show, exists in the Star Trek universe. Or not.

It doesn't follow. Just because Nimoy appeared in one of the shows, it doesn't follow that he must have had the same filmography.

If Star Trek did exist in the Trek universe, why is it that no one was saying to Kirk and Co., "Man, your costumes are so real! You really look like Kirk and Spock and Sulu and Chekov!" in Star trek 4?

I think we had Trip talking about Superman comics as well, in ENT. And Archer compared Silik to the 'Invisible Man' in Broken Bow. Actually, if you want contemporary references, then look no further than the Trek series set closest to our time, Enterprise.

I wonder if the two episodes with Shatner are still in there? Maybe it's an alternate universe (it must be, as it's impossible to have Star Trek the TV show exist in the same universe that will evetually have Kirk and the Enterprise in the 23rd century) and William Shatner is still in it, but of course he never played Kirk.
But would people in the 23rd century think that that actor looks uncannily like the captain of the Enterprise? Or did the "real" Kirk look different?
