Duchess of Cambridge in Labour

Didn't the navy used to do something similar? That a ship's commanding officer was sometimes called the name of the ship?

When a captain of a naval vessel arrives in a boat the announcement is made, for example, "Enterprise, arriving."

A baby that is healthy, wanted, and supported is always a wonderful thing to celebrate. :)

We don't need a royal family. While children are going to school hungry in brittian. We waste money on these benefit scrounges.
Role on the republic

Burn!

Personally I don't care about the Royal Family. I am happy to keep them as a vestige of our history, and a tourist attraction. But I don't have any interest in them personally.

A lot of energy and resource seems to be expended over this that could be better spent elsewhere.

There are quite a few of the old English titles going begging, with the contraction of the aristocracy.
Well, I'm free this weekend. I take one.

Bets on what? The baby's sex? Its size and weight? Or whether it will be a normal baby or . . . THE SPAWN OF SATAN!
Congratulations on the birth of your lizard!
Hey! That's my son! :klingon:

Yes clearly the money spent propping them up would be better spent on your education system.
 Good one.

Duke of Earl isn't a thing? :(
I'm partial to the Earl of Scruggs and the Duke of Ellington.

. . . We don't need more royals, it's not the Middle Ages. Lets Hope this sprog never makes it to the throne and that we have a president by then.
Didn't you Brits try getting rid of the monarchy back around the middle of the 17th century? I hear it didn't work out too well.

Yes the period known as the Interregnum. But the Cromwells, who ruled during that period were somewhat dictatorial.

Which is always a risk with a religious republic ! ;)

QUICK! TELL EVERYONE HOW THIS DOESN'T MATTER!

well, the baby hasn't picked his parents, so the anti-royalists should please not be so negative towards the little chap.
In my opinion what counts is that the baby is healthy (which it is) and that the family loves him (which they do) and shall do their best to give it a happy childhood and a good life (as ought to be every parent's goal).
Whether it'll be rich or poor, a king or a bus conductor, later, doesn't really matter at all as long as it'll grow up to be a nice and friendly person with good manners and a good character.

As for the Royals per se: yes, they may be expensive but they attract so many tourists that the costs are covered thousandfold and they do a damned good job at representing your country abroad (so long as the new great-granddad can hold his tongue :D ). I think on the whole they do a much better job than most elected politicians. And - you are propably too young to remember it - the Queen Mom turned the Tower grounds and Buckingham Palace gardens into veggie gardens during the war and the whole royal family worked there. The produce was given to the London hospitals. Plus the Queen is a certified car mechanic and actually worked as such during the war.
Show me one politician who'd do something like that!

But back to the topic: congratulations to the parents and all the country :) A healthy baby is always something to celebrate!

The one thing that amuses me about the royal family is that it's a vestige of the middle ages. So being driven in a car in a car seat is news.

The people must have their bread and circuses.
