News DSC Season 2 Premiere Reviews

Be aware of light spoilers, as Netflix has sent out the first three episodes, where as CBS has only sent out the first.

Well, not surprising to hear that the script is dreadful. The responsible parties will take to Twitter before midnight to congratulate themselves and one another.

This much is inarguable:
Will “Discovery” finally kill off Star Trek for good?

This is a preposterous question. The 1979 Star Trek movie shared many of “Discovery’s” difficulties; they did not kill the franchise. And a new writing team arrives with 2.6. I’ll also point out that CBS has greenlit not fewer than three other Star Trek series: the Jean-Luc Picard hourlong, an animated comedy about low-ranking Starfleet crew members, and a series about Section 31, the autonomous Starfleet black-ops division first revealed to viewers via a 1998 episode of “Deep Space Nine.”

I just hope the second season is less angsty than the first. I would like some old fashioned optimism and exploration.

Sounds like we're getting it -- several reviewers have commented to that effect, and the Times calls tonight's episode "delightful." Fingers crossed.

Why would you trust what someone else says instead judging for yourself?

I never do.

Since the writing on the first season was generally dreadful and the writer credited with the teleplay was responsible for some of the worst, why would it be surprising that Herc thinks this one is bad?

But even if DSC will ever produce an episode on the level of The Inner Light, Herc will probably still find reasons to piss on it. Some people are just determined to hate this show...

NPR review. The reviewer doesn't say much, other than pointing out the show now is closer in tone to classic Trek. The review is mostly audio clips and him talking about how he liked Discovery's original vision, which makes the lack of comparison rather frustrating. He does say some of the humor fails to land.

Independent gives it 3 stars out of 5 and compares the humor to the Marvel films:

Because a lot of other previews are positive about it.

Herc thinks all of DSC is bad.

You'd think there'd be enough early reviews in now - almost all of which are at least somewhat positive, and a few of which are, to use your words, "glowing," that Rottentomatoes would have some kind of critics rating in place (they gave The Orville 100% fresh early this season on the basis of all of nine reviews, so they don't really wait for many).

But, no critics rating so far. It does have a 46% "Audience Want-To-See" rating.

The thing I'm most interested in, is how they handle Spock and if Peck can handle the role. I tend to be hopeful in this regard as Kurtzman was there when Spock was reimagined for the Abrams films.

Newsweek. "Even if Discovery doesn’t grapple as intelligently as The Next Generation with questions of absolute power (and whether Star Trek’s ideals can stand tall when confronted with other moral systems) or as Deep Space Nine did with the concept of faith, the premiere of Season 2 at least places the series on the same game board."

I don't think Newsweek was watching TNG Season One episodes like "Code of Honor" or "Justice" when they wrote that article about TNG grappling with issues 'more intelligently'... ;)

(In other words: Honestly, just how 'intelligent' was TNG 16 episodes into its run <--- Which is where ST: D is in relation to TNG at this point in time...)

Well after having seen the first episode of season two I'm less than bowled over and have no idea what the point of it all was? :wtf:
