DSC review in major UK newspaper

Star Trek Discovery has been reviewed by the Guardian in the UK. For those unfamiliar with the Guardian, it's the traditional left-of-centre paper in the UK (though these days arguably is a centrist "New Labour"/Democrat bastion with a few old schoolers kept on.)

The review seems all over the place, more about Enterprise than DSC. However, one thing to bear in mind about the Guardian is that the below the line comments from the public are often more informative, amusing and generally readable than what the above the line "official" columnist has to say. I haven't read the BTL comments yet but pipe up if anything there really strikes a chord with you - in particular if people "out there" who are not part of hardcore Trek fandom have particular gripes/loves that are interesting for possible future development of the show.

Again I wonder about the correlation between people's enjoyment of Enterprise and Discovery. I does seem sometimes that if you didn't like Enterprise, you may be disinclined to like DSC. But we'd need some kind of surveys for that.

I think the most frequent linkage I see is between the fans of TNG and/or VOY and DSC, in the sense that those seem to be the people who have the biggest problem with the new show.

TNG and VOY are virtual opposites of DSC in terms of characters, tone, themes, arcs vs. episodic, etc. Meanwhile, ENT and DS9 are more similar...even down to certain aesthetics.

There was a survey done a couple of months ago...but I'm not sure it really drew any conclusions.

ENT was the only other Star Trek based series (besides the original Star Trek [TOS]) to show 'slightly better than us...' characters rather then the 'Utopian...always in virtual agreement on major plot resolution points' characters of TNG (and even to some extent DS9 - yes, they hemmed and hawed a bit more, but usually all came to the proper 'Federation Way is the Best Way" with regard to Starfleet personnel.)

So, yeah, if you loved that type of character paradigm from TNG, and didn't really care for the other character paradigm of the TOS and ENT eras; no, you will probably not klike the characters and their motivations in ST: D - and probably feel it's "Not Trek". :)
