If people don't understand what you're saying, it's not an attack against you to ask for clarification. Communication goes two ways, and that means if the speaker and the listener are using a word in two different ways, thereby keeping them from understanding each other, then they need to communicate that lack of understanding in order to resolve it. That's not about showing off or putting anyone down, it's just part of how conversation works.
