DS9 ReBoot

Bry_Sinclair

Vice Admiral
Admiral
I've already ReBooted TOS, VOY and ENT, so I thought I would give DS9 a bash (not that it needs it). Thoughts, feedback and opinions are all welcome. All the ranks are the ones they have when they first come onboard:

Commanding Officer - Commander Chakotay - Human - Male
A quiet, patient and precise man, he is an up-and-comer in the ranks. He is assigned to DS9 as he grew up along the Cardassian border and knows the politics of the region. I planned that in mid-S3, Chakotay would turn rogue, betray Starfleet and join the Maquis to fight for his homeworld. After that he would then become a recurring ally / adversary (depending on the situation).

Commanding Officer - Captain Benjamin Sisko - Human - Male
Much like the Sisko from the series, though without the Emissary stuff. After Chakotay joins the Maquis, he is assigned to take over, but finds a serious mess to clear up. He has a lot of work to do to get the station back on track, which isn't made any easier with Kira being even more hostile than before.

First Officer - Major Kira Nerys - Bajoran - Female
A fiesty and passionate woman, she works towards the betterment of Bajor and doesn't believe that Starfleet has any right to be there. Her 'personal' relationship with Chakotay slowly changes her mindset, until he betrays her. Sisko then has his hands full and has to work a lot harder to win over her trust.

Strategic Ops Officer - Lt. Commander Martin Madden - Human - Male
He joins at the start of S4 (with Pazlar), in order to keep an eye on the Cardassians, Maquis and also what is happening on the station. Though his arrival is met with a great deal of suspicion. He is a thorough and dedicated officer, who is more than willing to stand up to both Sisko and Kira.

Chief Science Officer - Lieutenant Jadzia Dax - Trill - Female
She is the adventurous old soul in a young woman's body, full of life and forever searching for new experiences. This Dax won't be killed (or if she did, her host wouldn't be Ezri--as she is onboard my Voyager).

Chief Medical Officer - Lieutenant Selar - Vulcan - Female
The reserved and logical Vulcan doctor onboard, she is forever at the mercy of Dax's attempts to get her to loosen upand relax a little.

Station Counsellor - Lieutenant JG Melora Pazlar - Elaysian - Female
She comes aboard at the start of S4, following Chakotay's betrayal and the negative impact that has had on the station. She will have her work cut out for her. Her character is much the same as the canon one; strong-willed, independent and needs a wheelchair in order to get around.

Chief Tactical Officer - Ensign Julian Bashir - Human - Male
A brilliant young officer, who almost beat the record for the highest Academy record, if it weren't for one wrong answer in his finals. He is suave and smooth, with a keen tactical mind. Like the canon Bashir, he too will be genetically enhanced, though there will be very subtle hints about this, until it is revealed.

Chief of Operations - Senior Chief Miles O'Brien - Human - Male
He will be just as he is in the canon series, very human in how he looks at and handles life.

Chief of Security - Odo - Shape Shift - Male
Like O'Brien, not much about him would be different. Seeing as how the series would be very different for the canon one, I'm not sure how much Dominion involvement there would be. He would definately find his home though, but was thinking it had been obliterated, and he was the last (known) member of his species.

Bar Owner - Quark - Ferengi - Male
Quark is Quark. What more is there to say?

Station Resident - Jacqueline Sisko - Human - Female
Sisko's teenaged daughter, who he is raising alone after his wife was killed at Wolf 359. Jackie won't follow her father into Starfleet, but will become a reporter, and the friendship between her and Nog may become something more as they get older.

The DS9 characters as written are strong. Even Dax is a good character; they just didn't write anything good for her (plus they could have cast a more interesting actor). There's no point to rewriting them.

Chakotay adds nothing to the cast; he's not nearly in the same league as the DS9 characters. And to have a Maquis character stab Starfleet in the back wouldn't look very good during the Dominion War. He'd lose audience sympathy and then he'd be useless as a character. If you must drag him into it, make him a Maquis character fighting the Dominion all along, occasionally ally of Starfleet.

It would be more fun to cast the characters over again with actors who are now in the right age range. William Fitchner as Odo, Robert Knepper as Dukat, that sort of thing.

Totally agree w/the hot Vorta. Fan wank of DS9 (almost) isn't permitted.
Chakotay? Really? He's such a pussy

.

So glad they didnt have Melora as a series regular. It was an interesting idea for one episode, but really, we cant have someone confined to a wheelchair in a series which often relies on fast paced action, or visits to other planets.

I dont think that Bashir would have worked as a tactical officer, most of the themes that surrond his character are involved in the idea that he wants to help people, and he often stands in contrast with the more pragmatic members of the crew.

I dont think the Chakotay idea is a bad one in theory, but DS9 already has too many dfferent storylines, and the role of adversary/ally is already filled admirably (until season 7) by Dukat.

I think the way to make DS9 better is by removing some elements (Ezri, Pah'Wraiths) rather than adding things.

Agreed besides the Emissary stuff was good the pah wraiths was bad. Besides without the Prophets, there is no way the Federation and Friends could have stopped the Dominion from crushing them in the war. And why should Sisko the superior character start by playing second fiddle to Chakotay.

Seriously most of janeway's crew was useless anyway only Tuvok, B'elana and Seven of Nine seemed to do anything useful for the most part the rest could be deleted with no problem.

You think B'elana was useful?! At what, getting pregnant? In the wise words of sfdebris, the girl 'cant identify shit without a tricorder!'

A freaking men. When ever Chakotay uttered, "Katherine"something very lame or pussified was about to be said or done.

Remove Bajor and the whiny Bajorans. Also remove the yapping dog Kira. Then add any other planet, recast Dax with a real actress.

Oh, and add Andorians. Always add Andorians to everything. They're full of win.

Remove Bajor and the whiny Bajorans. Also remove the yapping dog Kira.
And call it Star Trek: The Next Next Generation, after you've removed everything great that made DS9 what it was. Why the hell would you call that DS9?

I enjoyed some of the writing, the character development, certain characters (Garak comes to mind). So I don't think removing Bajor is taking away the best thing about DS9 but if you think so...

Look, if Chakotay was in DS9 then he shouldn't have been a Fleeter at all. He should've been part of a separatist movement within the DMZ that existed even before the DMZ did and evolved into the Maquis so to use the Cardassian situation to gain support from other DMZ colonies and Bajorans to advance their own agenda of independence.

Better all-around definition of the Maquis would be good too. Actually bother showing how they are truly different from the Feds in terms of politics and ideology, make them truly opposed groups to one another.

And show that the Dominion Starfleet has other aliens in it like the Hunters and random Gamma Quadrant aliens (enslaved or enlisted).

The only major weakness in the the original cast was that Dax was badly written and acted. If you where to reboot I would make it a Ezri type, newly joined and still getting used to it, so by season 7 she grown to be ok and enjoy being the Nth life of Dax.
