DS9 Re-Mastered Special Effects - Droolish Ideas!

No more Rick Berman's "No Enterprise-E" rule...

Imagine getting to see the Big E and maybe some Intrepid Class, Prometheus Class, et cetera, in the Fleets during the Dominion War...

I know we didn't see them in The Sacrifice of Angels but if you look closely at Nog's Computer Console when Sisko is ordering around the fighters you see a Tactical Scan of a Sovereign Class Ship just over his shoulder.

yeah it got tiring see all those reused effects shots, the final chapter really suffered from reused/not enough effects.

Fix the registry number of the second Defiant so it's not bloody NX-74205 again.
Ron Moore has said that he wanted it to be the 74205-A, but that it was too cost-prohibative to do it for only the last two eps.

The thing is that DS9 really didn't need much in the way of SFX, because its story-telling was IMHO, several steps above TNG such that the characters and the story sold each episode, and the decently rendered shots of the Defiant and the fleet battles were just a plus to many episodes. I think DS9 is the upper limits of the series that would actually benefit from any "updating" because after it, the shows were basicaly mostly CGI SFX extravaganzas rather then charachter driven shows anyways.

Be that as it may, put me first on the list to see a re-mastered version of such visually stunning episodes as "Sacrifice of Angels" or "The Die is Cast". That would be beyond cool.

Why would you want to see a new version if the existing one is already "visually stunning"?

I hate this idea, it disrespects the incredible amounts of work and creativity put into the old shows.

And, unlike TOS and early TNG, DS9's battles were awesome then and are awesome now.

That, plus, if you look closely there is a shot of the dedication plaque of the rechristened Defiant in WYLB. You can see the registry number is visible as NCC-75633. Not that it mattered though. The Prometheus had two different registry numbers.

The Miranda-class needs to fire their pulse phasers or photon torpedoes at least once.
To add in a few more shots of Starfleet ship action they could use the shots from First Contact.
Some of the damaged/destroyed ships in the background could have escape pods being jettisoned.

Just wanted to add I just rewatched The Changing face of Evil. In that you can see an Intrepid Class on the monitor at one point (after Negh'Var)

I've been on a high horse all day, and I'm not done. Star Trek fans need to let go. Star Trek is not the holy grail, its not a religion, and episodes filmed for pure entertainment purposes have absolutely no need for our "integrity" or our "loyalty" People worked hard on making them, but people usualy work hard on making anything. Changing a few SFX, adding sound FX, or changing lighting and colors on a few shots is not going to disrespect anybody, and if the end result is a cleaner, more vivid, or even something a director himself feels is more in line with what he origiannly envisioned (ISB or Berman has made no such comments that I'm aware of, but its the princple I'm aiming for.) then that pretty much sums it up to me. With that said, a lot of the DS9 episodes ARE fine the way they are, but I won't complaign for even a second if CBS did decide to remaster the series, though I don't think they will.

More variety of ships in the battles would be nice (I just want to see one Connie still in service in the 24th century. And there are a dozen other established classes and variants like Ambassadors, Sovereigns, Nebulas, Intrepids, and all those one-off frankenstein ships that were rarely (if at all) used on DS9 and could give more life to the fleet scenes).

And all the Federation ships should have names, numbers, and other hull markings. Or at least the ones in the foreground.

There is one episode that defitnaly needs to be remastered. I forgot the name but it was early on when DS9 moved from models to CGI. There was a huge fleet going to DS9. I remember seeing a Klingon ship. It was so ugly. Babylon 5 ugly. It was post Way of the Warrior.

Lots of big fleet shots I'm afraid post Way of the Warrior :(

By Inferno's Light. Dukat was commanding a BOP when he joined the Dominion fleet heading for Cardassia. The shot of the ships moving away was particularly bad. I have a sneaking suspicion this is the episode you're thinking of.

So there is some talk now about re-mastering TNG. Nothing substantial, nothing concrete, but there have been "discussions" and they're doing "tests" about re-mastering TNG and, of course, the special effects.

This got my thinking...

This requires many IFs... but...

IF they re-master TNG...

And IF that leads to DS9 getting re-mastered...

What would you all think about really taking DS9's SFX to the edge and back?

Imagine getting to see the Defiant really tear the shit out of the Jem'Hadar!

Or seeing those epic fleet battles like we never imagined!

No more stock-footage in the battle scenes...

No more Rick Berman's "No Enterprise-E" rule...

Imagine getting to see the Big E and maybe some Intrepid Class, Prometheus Class, et cetera, in the Fleets during the Dominion War...

The Defiant could tear the Jem'Hadar apart like we've only ever envisioned in our dreams...

DS9 truly self-destructing in all her glory in that third season episode with Miles time-jumping (forget the title)...

Maybe we could see someone get tossed out an airlock through CGI! :guffaw:

Some really juicy possibilities here... :D

I can see that DS9 would also need to be re-shot for HDTV, but in terms of FX, there really isn't a lot that needs to be changed substantially.

RAMA
