DS9 on Blue Ray!

Ummmm, that's been there for years (the "review" was posted in 2009), and it's not proof that DS9 is coming to blu-ray as Amazon frequently put up product pages for not-yet-existing stuff.

The sad truth is that DS9 is very unlikely to be released in HD as it would require a substantial investment to re-edit the whole show and it's unlikely that they would make enough money off it. There's a chance that TNG might get a HD makeover as that show was considerably more popular, but don't hold your breath for DS9 or Voyager.

The effects were shot on video, as opposed to film, right? In order for it to look decent on Blu-Ray, they would have to re-shoot all the effects, which is too costly. Wasn't this the primary reason why DS9 can't be transfered to HD?

Sadly, it's even worse than that. The entire show was edited in SD format, so they would need to get the original film footage and re-edit the whole show and make it match the SD version. They can probably do it, but it would cost a lot of money and they might not make that back.

In the TOS 2nd season Blu-ray, there's one DS9 episode shown in 1080P..

"Trials and Tribble-ations" and it simply looks horrible.. A simple up-convert would be VERY bad..

CBS would need to have everything re-mastered...esp. the effects shots...

Only if they think it would be PROFITABLE will it get HD treatment.. perhaps if the TNG BRD sets sell as well as the TOS ones...

Dear OP, it's only pronounced "Blue Ray". The term you're looking for is Blu-ray.

Apart from that, if TNG is released on Blu-ray (there's a long discussion in the adjacent forum), and if it's also a financial success for CBS, then DS9 on Blu-ray might be a possibility.

Don't mistake an Amazon.com listing as any kind of official announcement. If that were the case, you could soon expect It's Garry Shandling's Show on Blu-ray - and I don't see that happening.

Ouch! What a waste of pixels. Is that interlacing I see? It didn't earn that "P" at all! And the edges of the Enterprise make it painfully obvious it's just upscaled from SD. Even for an upconvert it looks pretty bad. Hopefully one day these shows can see the light of day in true HD in some form.

It is sad, a DS9 Blu-ray release would be right up there with the recent LotR SEE Blu-ray release in my books.

I for one would be willing to spend $150 or even up to $250 on a series 1-7 box set, but most people wouldn't.

Ah, that's what I get for jumping the gun.

I'd probably do the same.

Well, I think it would cost a lot more than that. When TNG and DS9 (and I think VOY as well) were first released on DVD, the standard price in the stores (Best Buy, Media Play, etc.) and on Amazon was $99 per season, or about $700 for the entire show.

It took several years for that price to come down very much - DS9 was released in 2003, I believe, and prices for the entire show have only been in the range you are quoting above for the past couple of years, I think - at least for the non-pirated sets.

Assuming DS9 came out on Blu-Ray today (which as several posters above indicated it would not), I wouldn't expect a price below $250 for the show for about 3-4 years minimum - maybe longer. At which time, Blu-Ray will probably be obsolete.

Ugh...well, that sucks. I guess I'll just continue to enjoy the show on DVD, then.

I'm not dissapointed really, i'm sick of the idea of having to buy all my dvd's again less than a decade after buying my first standalone DVD player. Sick and tired of it!

No one will ever force you to buy anything. If that's what you think you are acting compulsively and you should try and get yourself checked out by a psychiatrist. ;)

Yeah, my blu-ray player can up-res better than that. Horrible waste!
