DS9 on BBC America

It really steamed me that they would drop the farewell scene between Garak and Bashir in WYLB. And they cut out the funny bit in the episode when Kira Damar and Garak were going to “storm the castle” and they don’t have the proper weapon and they start laughing hysterically. Why cut out the laughter? Good comic relief.

Is this the edit where it's presented as Part 1 & Part 2, rather than the original two-hour version? If it's the two-part edit, I think that's the material they cut waaaaaaaay back in the day to make room for the additional opening credits/end titles/previously on. I remember being pissed at the time, watching the first rerun, that the Garak/Bashir farewell scene is where they went to cut (I'm less certain about the "storm the castle" scene).

I never watch Trek on TV because of the heavy editing, not to mention commercials. Neither of which is acceptable. Streaming is superior in every possible way. Considering broadcast television is dying I don't think we'll ever see a new Trek series there again with the exception of the upcoming Nikolodean animated show.

I just finished watching Discovery season 1. I was disappointed by the lack of character development - they had lots of good ideas for the characters' backgrounds, but hardly ever explored what they meant and how they felt about it. They were too busy yelling things because they were all about to die... no downtime. I'm glad to hear season 2 is better, maybe I'll try to get ahold of it.

I think they did that on purpose. Lorca didn't care about any of those people beyond using them to further his own goals. Because he didn't use them to THEIR potential or get to know them, nether did we. In my eyes this was immediately corrected in S2 when Pike made it a point to ask everyone's name and station. Again, probably done on purpose by the writers to show the stark contrast between a good captain and a bad captain. That segue was brilliant.

Been watching the marathon going on right now. Haven’t seen some of the S1 stuff in a long time.

I know...people complain about “Star Trek The Next Generation”’s Season 1 having a lack of character development, but over Discovery’s so far 26 episode 2-season order, I’m still having trouble remembering all the main character names, since a lot of them are being presented more or less as generic background characters. At least with TNG S1, by the end of the 26 episodes you could remember the character names.

But back on topic, I haven’t seen the first episode of “Star Trek:Picard” (I taped it onto VHS as I was at work and just got home, but it’s interesting how CTV’s Sci-Fi Channel aired it in the midst of a “Star Trek Deep Space Nine” marathon (I think they started airing it around 4 pm). Right now they are airing the first episode (Penumbra) of DS9’s series finale arc (Sisko asks Kassidy to marry him; Ezri goes looking for Worf in the Badlands). Don’t know if there’s any significance for Picard, but interesting cross promotion.
