DS9 is getting a new DVD release

Also hopefully, the packaging on this release will not SUCK, unlike the last one.
Yeah, the packaging is terrible. It looks good, but it's so fragile that they fall apart not long after you buy them. All seven seasons I own are in really bad shape, so I'm glad they're re-releasing them.

I should have said so originally, but that was my opinion. Not verifiable fact. Mark my words though. :)
Well, that makes more sense. And you may be proven correct. That is the CBS way...why release a new version, when you can just repackage something from 10 years ago.

But if I remember correctly, at about the time they released TNG on BR, didn't they reissue DVDs as well? I'm assuming those were cleaned up versions of the DVDs, but I never bought them so I don't know. Maybe we will see better quality DVDs for DS9. I'd rather see BR, but I think that is nigh impossible at this point. SO, if they do have better quality DVDs, I may be tempted to buy them in Feb...depending on price, and how much better they are.

Yeah he's right - they would not create new masters at significant cost at this stage of the game, remember they haven't even reissued the TNG DVDs in "remastered" format.

The comments in the thread about "I wish they would remaster these so I can pick them up after a couple of years for £50" tell you everything you need to know about the justification for ANY investment in Trek physical media, and we are the hardcore fans.

If they are reasonably priced, this would be a grab for me. I've taken my Trek on Netflix for granted.

A few months ago I bought the big single re-release of "MacGyver" featuring Seasons 1-4. Even though the packaging made it seem as though CBS was the one the produced the DVD's and Paramount was only distributing them, on the actual discs you can tell that they were produced by Paramount as each disc opens with the Paramount DVD logo from the early-2000's.

So all the recent CBS DVD re-releases are just reusing the glass masters that were created by Paramount and CBS 10-20 years ago. It makes sense as creating just one glass master costs anywhere from $5,000 USD (for real simple DVD's/Blu-Ray's) to $15-20,000 (for highly complex DVD's/Blu-Ray's), so for a set with 7 discs you might be looking at $35,000 to $140,000. For glass masters you usually want a minimum run of 5,001 copies in order to sell the disc at a $19.99/disc price tag.

I suppose some will argue that True Fans will buy the set even if they have every season already, just to encourage the powers that be to remaster DS9 for HD.

TVSHOWSONDVD.COM has more information and artwork. the arwork reminds me of the European reissues, but I've got to wonder why Dominion War Sisko is shown on the covers of Seasons 1,2 & 3, even in the complete series pack, plus the Defiant is on the Season 1 & 2 individual covers! is this kind of like the editing error with "Valhalla", someone just wasn't paying attention?

Also I would expect to see the big Seasons 1-3 slipcase from the Complete Series, released seperately for probably Christmas next year, since that's what I've seen for TNG and MacGyver.

Not to get political, but after 2016, quite frankly nothing people do surprises me any more!

Well I'm glad to see DS9 getting at least a bit of attention again, even if it's just a new DVD release. Of course naturally this is just AFTER I finished buying all the original boxed sets I had been missing once it became clear the Blu-ray wasn't gonna happen!

Nice thing I've discovered in my rewatch though is that the picture quality does improve quite a bit from about Season 3 on. Which makes it a whole lot easier to watch than before.

Mine are literally ripping apart every time I use it, even though I am careful with them.
Same here. I've had them since they came out in 2003-2004, and they started to fall apart right away. I ended up using several rolls of scotch tape to patch them back together.

I'm strongly considering putting money aside until I can afford to rebuy the complete series sets of all the shows, but in the case of TNG I can't tell if the complete set that came out last summer were the original or remastered versions. No website I look up has this info. Anyway at the rate I can save it'll be 2018 before I can afford them anyhow. Probably 2019. And the complete series set of Voyager has yet to come out, although it probably will by then.
