DS9 in the UK

Vash, and Sisko punching Q in the face, are just about the only things worth watching in Q-Less. Always liked Q on TNG, but he just didn't work on DS9 and I'm pretty glad they wrote it off as a bad idea after this one.

that's 'cos... wait for it... he's NOT Picard!

loved it. especially when I think of the animosity he'd once harbored toward the man (and for all we know, still did).

a classic line.

^^ I think his resentment had been somewhat tempered by that point. He was at least civil with Picard at the end of The Emissary, although I'm sure he'd still not take kindly to any comparison like the one Q was making! LOL

I must admit, I've always liked that line, if not just for comedic effect, but because it highlights the change in attitude towards Picard of Q. That and Q's actions in All Good Things suggest that there's a respect there for Picard that Q rarely affords anyone. I always thought that that was a nice little touch.

It also highlighted that there's a major difference between Picard and Sisko. Q was right, Picard WOULD never have hit him. Sisko's a man of action over intellect when contrasted to Picard. That's not to say that Sisko's stupid, simply that he doesn't constrain himself to cerebral/intellectual methods. Given what happens later in the series, it's a good job!

I hope they don't do that when they get to season three, as Through the Looking Glass was made between Improbable Cause and The Die is Cast.

Although, maybe Through the Looking Glass could take place between them, it could be a long way to DS9 from the system Odo and Garak were in.

The Christmas Radio Times says they're going with Improbable Cause, Through the Looking Glass, and The Die Is Cast in that order...

And there's a seven-ep marathon on Christmas Day.

Early season 3 at the mo. Yesterday was Meridian, Monday is Defiant. The 8pm Christmas Day episode is Destiny, and we see in the New Year on the 31st with Improbable Cause...

I've been following it regularly at the 11.00 a.m. timeslot - though I'm either asleep or somewhere else at that time normally, so I record it and view when available. It's been interesting working my way through the first two seasons to the pivotal third, how the show evolved and grew, how Garak and Dukat began to step into the limelight and a race of weird looking aliens who want tuleberry drop the first hints of a powerful menace...

All in all, it's a fun ride. I've never seen the entire series from start to finish - whole chunks of it, sure - so this is an interesting ride. :)

I'm catching up on DS9 on the Virgin 1 repeats - the second and third seasons are a lot better than I remembered them...

so how is it doing? any idea of ratings? do you guys have ratings of reruns over there?

I have no idea how you would even check for ratings on the BBC. Does anyone know? Emissary did well when it aired on Virgin 1.

It's still on Virgin 1. We're up to 'Fascination' as of today. Presumably if people can get ratings for 'Emissary', ratings for 'Fascination' are available... damned if I know how it's done, though.

BARB (Broadcasting Audience Research Board) compile ratings, but they don't seem to have Virgin 1 yet. Although the ratings for Emissary seem to be higher than TNG of last week.

Seems strange that TNG is on Bravo doesn't it? Although Bare Sex is a great film and Dog the Bounty Hunter is a great series. They beat TNG in the ratings!

I hope they start including Virgin 1 soon. Although it could be due to the fact that its the main channel of the Virgin Digital network.

And yeah, Bravo is a really odd place for TNG to be on. Between bounty hunters and porn. :guffaw:

Is this channel free on Sky? My Mum cancelled Sky since we barely watch it. I don't want her to start paying for it just so that i can watch one channel.

It's a standard Sky digital channel, so far as I know.

The observation about watching little on Sky is interesting, however. I just got Sky this summer. And god, is it addictive. I've already filled my recording-box with dozens of films, most, predictably, from the Sky Classics channel (I got the film channels, you see). It's been a real treat seeing The Blue Dahlia and The Palm Beach Story and Cape Fear (the sizzling Hitchcock film, naturally)... and even getting to gaze at the, uh, weirdness that is The Conqueror. I discovered and became an advocate for Renaissance.

Oh, and I've been watching DS9 on Virgin 1, with Dexter and Charlie Jade on FX, and the odd Frasier on the Paramount Comedy channels. All-in-all, this is more TV then I watched before I got Sky - back then, my TV was just my screen to watch DVDs on. ;)

Course, on the reverse end of the coin, the stuff I don't watch on Sky compared to what I do is absolutely mind-boggling. I don't even have an idea what most of the channels actually have. Channel surfing has informed me it's probably best I continue to remain in ignorance.

And it's been quite interesting to compare DS9 to this unlikely uncompany. It fares pretty well. Its stolid, classical set composition is a refreshing change from the often awkward shakycam of Charlie Jade. One really appreciates Star Trek's largely consistent Berman-era look when you contrast it to modern alternatives. The writing, currently at S3, veers around erratically from the brilliant to the 'Uh... who approved this?'

Monday, I got 'Defiant', and loved it. It's got just about everyhting that makes DS9 a great show. Tuesday, I got 'Fascination', and noted with amusement how differently a DS9 Fan Trailer would go if it had Odo awkwardly swaying to a beat and then Lwaxana embracing him. This episode was one big meh all round - but tame compared to how downright repugnant Jade can get when it's bad.
