DS9 in the UK

^ Virgin 1 has the rights to all the episodes of all the series of DS9, ENT, TNG and VOY, it's only the original series that they don't have as the Sci-Fi channel has that.

Watching the second half of the Emissary. They didn't cut before credits this time. And I'd forgotten how utterly weird the introduction to the Prophets was... damn, they really became pedestrian by comparison later on.

I really liked the other Cardassian Gul in that episode as well. It would have been cool to see him again.

Kegek said:Ahh. My vision clears. I guess they're a News Corp channel, then?

Heh, far, far from it :)

The channel is the "flagship" for VirginMedia cable, the company had a spat with their rival BSkyB satellite over rights to show their "flagship" channel Sky 1, former home of the Trek they're now showing. They ended up losing it in a case a judge summed up as being a bit childish.

This is their attempt to have a channel of their own that will be watched for its big series.

TOS seems to have detached from the other series when the Beeb lost them. It was shown on E4 then in remastered form on the UK Sci-Fi channel and back on the Beeb in standard form early mornings.

Interestingly, they're showing "A Man Alone" before "Past Prologue", which I think is the order they were filmed in but reverse order from when they were originally shown.

I hope they don't do that when they get to season three, as Through the Looking Glass was made between Improbable Cause and The Die is Cast.

Although, maybe Through the Looking Glass could take place between them, it could be a long way to DS9 from the system Odo and Garak were in.

Yes, I'm looking forward to rewatching it today. "A Man Alone" was also pretty good, not a bad episode yet. As I recall, DS9's S1 had a strong few early episodes, then a severe slump in the middle, and then went out with a bang with the double-whammy of "Duet" and "In the Hands of the Prophet." It's nice to be on this journey again, as it were. :)

Move Along Home and The Passenger are rubbish but I really like episodes like The Nagus, Battle Lines and The Storyteller. I liked how the last two especially have storylines which are revisited in the novels.

I love "Past Prologue", especially the extremist arrogance of the Bohn-Ma. In retrospect, it's a pity the Maquis de facto took this organisation's place, as they were more connected to Bajor and thus more interesting in DS9 terms. But then, we wouldn't have had Eddington... ;)

Damn picture breakup keeps affecting Freeview in our area. Other than that, I'm really enjoying DS9 every evening. They really had the characters down from the word go didn't they?

Anyone notice that O'Brien's farewell to Picard was missing on the 2-part version of Emissary? Since having Patrick Stewart in your first episode was a major draw, you'd think they would've cut something else when splitting into two 45 minuters.

Yes, that bugged me a little, I was looking forward to that scene. It's the only one Picard has in that episode with someone besides Sisko, and given that O'Brien is being imported from TNG, it's pretty touching.

Past Prologue was better than I remember, mainly because of Garak's scene stealing! Interesting to see Lursa and B'Etor again. They weren't exactly the highlight of Generations but here the Cleavage Sisters were important to the plot. Again that shows the strength of DS9's writing.

Actually, I also think it's damn good due to the Bajoran plot, but yeah, Garak steals all the scenes he's in... and the episode. Andrew J. Robinson was told after the episode they'd definately want to bring him back... they considered it polite bull at the time. ;)

Frankly, I think this is the best handling of the Duras sisters, because unlike 'Redemption', 'Firstborn', and Generations, they're reduced to a very small role.

Like I said, DS9 started really strong, with 'Emissary' followed by 'A Man Alone' and 'Past Prologue' (in either order). Sadly, today we'll get an episode that's a good example of why S1 in general isn't that good: Bland, unimaginative execution of a sci-fi premise. I speak, of course, of 'Babel'.

Watches Q-less on Virgin 1 last night.

It's a real pity that Q didn't come back to DS9. Him and Sisko had an interesting relationship, that was given very little time to develop in this episode.

I don't know. I think 'Q-Less' a good TNG episode that's going through the motions of being a DS9 episode. It's about that romantic triangle between Q, Vash and Picard without the third end, with both Q and Vash looking forward to their next encounter with the flagship captain. O'Brien sits around expoisiting TNG plots, but forgets to mention 'Encounter at Farpoint', which seems to be the loose inspiration for the crisis plot and Q's relationship to it. Q gets to deride the DS9 crew with his usual wisecracks, tartly observing that O'Brien was 'one of the little people' on TNG, but most memorably this:

Q: You hit me. Picard would not have hit me!
Sisko: I'm not Picard.
Q: Indeed not. You're much more easier to provoke. How fortunate for me.

Which is also kind of why the relationship really didn't work. Q couldn't get the 'witty repartee' he sought for in Sisko, just a knockdown punch.

I'll say this, though. I wish he'd come back after Worf came onboard. 'Growl for me Microbrain, show me you still care!' ;)

On the other episodes: 'Captive Pursuit' is great as ever, 'Babel' was okay, actually, better than I remembered it. 'Dax' is an interesting episode that plays around with the idea of Trill symbiosis but doesn't come to a concrete answer, using a last-minute relevation to solve its plot machinations instead. No real clunkers so far.

Maybe there was an over-reliance on Vash, and on referencing TNG. Might have been worth another shot though. Q and Kira's brief exchange in particular showed promise I thought.

Wow, that musr be a very poweful satellite receiver. To make an episode appear better than it was. :guffaw: ;) Can't wait til you get to Profit and Lace... :D
