DS9 BOOK NEWS

Marco Palmieri

Rear Admiral
Rear Admiral
Okay, I’ve put this off long enough. Time to get real. For those of you who are into the new DS9 novels, I have both Good News and—yes, you guessed it—Bad News.

First, THE BAD NEWS.

I’m sorry to have to report that UNITY is being delayed again. The truth is, quite simply, that it isn’t finished yet, and it won’t be ready to publish in April as the author and I had hoped back when I announced the first postponement. Instead, it will publish in November, 2003, and will close out our DS9 tenth anniversary celebration rather than opening it as originally planned.

There are several reasons for these delays, which I was reluctant to discuss earlier because they involve some personal issues, but the author and I have agreed that those of you looking forward to UNITY deserve to know the truth.

First, the project was started late. Author S.D. Perry (or Danelle, as she likes to be called) was ready to dive into UNITY right after she finished Rising Son almost a year ago. Unfortunately, she was delayed by my inability to devote adequate attention to the project while I worked on Mission: Gamma, which by itself was a long and complex series to edit.

But even though we got off to a late start, UNITY could have actually made its original January, ’03 pub date, if not for two wonderful but complicating coincidences.

The first was that my wife became pregnant.

The second was that Danelle became pregnant.

What are the odds, right?

So…There we were, each with children on the way and both experiencing a work slowdown because of our changing circumstances. That’s when we decided to move the book to April ’03, giving, we thought, the extra time Danelle would need to wrap things up before her baby was due.

But you know kids—sometimes they catch you by surprise.

Danelle’s baby was born a month earlier than expected, and before she could finish work on the novel. I’m happy to report that baby and mother were both fine despite the premature delivery, but it shattered any hope we had of getting UNITY out in April, especially when my wife gave birth not long after.

That brings us to where we are now. Danelle is adjusting to motherhood, and has eased back into writing. My attention is no longer as divided as it had been. In short, UNITY is at last slowly being completed, and you can now look forward to reading it in November.

That strikes me as a good place to segue into…

THE GOOD NEWS

I’m happy to be able to announce the tentative list of contributors to this year’s previously announced Deep Space Nine anniversary anthology, PROPHECY AND CHANGE:

Christopher L. Bennett (SCE: Aftermath)
Elizabeth Braswell (first published Star Trek story)
Keith R.A. Decandido (DS9: Demons of Air and Darkness)
Heather Jarman (DS9: This Gray Spirit)
Jeffrey Lang (DS9: Abyss)
Michael A. Martin and Andy Mangels (DS9: Cathedral)
Una McCormack (first published Star Trek story)
Terri Osborne (first published Star Trek story)
Andrew J. Robinson (DS9: A Stitch in Time)
Kevin G. Summers (DS9: "Isolation Ward 4," from Strange New Worlds IV)

Remember, this contributor list is still tentative and subject to change. As already announced, the stories in this collection will span the entire of length of DS9’s seven television seasons, and beyond. PROPHECY AND CHANGE will be published in September.

MORE GOOD NEWS

I’m also pleased to announce that the post-finale Deep Space Nine novels will continue beyond UNITY. As part of the continuing effort to diversify this line of fiction, 2004 will see the publication of WORLDS OF DEEP SPACE NINE, a staggered miniseries of three double novels focusing on the different planets and peoples showcased in the DS9 saga. Each standalone story will immerse readers in a different alien culture while at the same time tying directly into the continuing storyline of the post-finale DS9 novels.

Utilizing a different author for each story, the books will each contain two novellas (similar to THE BADLANDS and THE BRAVE AND THE BOLD), focusing on two worlds in each volume. The civilizations visited in these stories will include Bajor, Cardassia, The Dominion, Ferenginar, Trill, and Andor, with emphasis on established characters connected to those cultures.

Although an exact schedule for WORLDS OF DEEP SPACE NINE is still to be determined, the current plan is to publish one volume approximately every three or four months beginning in 2004. Contributing authors to be announced.

And maybe I'll even manage to publish them on time. :o :D

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!

Great author list for the anthology though. Nice to see that Andy Robinson will at least write something, even if it's not a full novel

Congratulations to both of you on your new arrivals!!!

This board continues to amaze me. I never would have expected a Pocket Book Editor to be so involved with the fans and so forthcoming about projects. I'm blown away. And I'm so thankful I've found this board...

Keep up the good work Marco and crew... Your update is much appreciated. Looks like Unity will now be a Christmas present this year... :)

And thanx to The Trek BBS people for creating a wonderful gathering place for Trekkers, trekkies, People of Trek, etc... :borg:

Congrats to both of you and S.D. Perry on the new addtions to your families! While it would have been great to read Unity in April, at least you're taking the time to make sure its done right. I'm sure it'll be a great book, well worth the wait.

And next year's books sound fascinating too!

^^ Ditto. This board is awesome!
Must be something in the water...
Congratulations to you, your family and Danelle!!! That is so exciting. I think two new babies are an *excellent* reason for a book delay. :) Sure, I was looking forward to "Unity" but I am perfectly happy to wait till Fall; now I've got two books to look forward to.
And the Anthology sounds awesome; very exciting that Andy Robinson will be writing again. Now, if you could just cajole David George III into writing something for it... ;)
My congratulations, again.

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAUUUUUUUUUUUUUUGGGGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!
I was really anticpating "Unity". Oh well. Gives me something to look forward to later in the year.

Congratulations on your new arrivals! :)

Hey, at least it will seem more like a season finale when it comes out. Before, it was coming out and being followed up by two books that take place before it. Whether or not 'The Left Hand of Destiny' books tie in to the relaunch is beside the point. Now 'Unity' will really seem like a finale to top off 2003. :)

I am a bit disappointed but these things cannot be helped. I suppose it be worth the wait. Hopefully there be other interesting books to read in between. Congratultions and I wish you and the rest of the family all the best.

One question. Since Unity has been delayed until November 2003 would this mean that the DS9 novels that follow would also be delayed? I am assuming that there will be continuity between the novels?

Congratulations, to both Marco and Danelle on the new arrivals!!!

It's a terrible shame that Unity has been delayed again, but hopefully it will be well worth the wait! :)

I'm really looking for both Prophecy and Change & Worlds of DS9. I'm really glad that Andrew Robinson is writing again. I can't wait for the story on Cardassia in Worlds. Ever since Robinson's book, I've come to really like the Cardassians.

Terrific news about your growing family. We've got three and recommend the experience to everyone. You will notice a fundamental change to your world view shortly -- if not already.

Also, the lineup on Prophecy and Change looks fantastic. I know those people's work -- including one of the first-publications folk -- and know it will be excellent.

What has really caught my eye, though, is the "Worlds" series. One more example of how you are taking DS9 literature into deeper and more challenging waters. We are living in exciting times indeed.

Without putting words in Marco's mouth... (waves to the boss)

My understanding is that the novels that are scheduled for the rest of 2003 and into 2004 will stay on their current schedules--that pushing off "Unity" won't impact when they come out. (This is not a domino effect, in other words).

Worlds of DS9 will be the first "post-Unity" relaunch novels (step in and correct me if I'm wrong, Marco or KRAD!). Some people around here like calling Avatar to Unity "season 8." Maybe it would be safe to call "Worlds of DS9" the first chapters in season 9.

Well now I know why the reviewer mentioned in "Don't want to star a riot..." is a total fake. Teach me to confuse Unity and Rising Son. D'oh!

Well, congrats to Mrs. Marco and to Danelle on Palmieri and Perry: The Next Generations. :D

And a KHAAANN!!!!! to the delay (but at least, for great reasons) of Unity.

And a Huzzah, Hip hip hurray, and WAHOO!!! on the continuing voyages of the Starship Enter-- er... of the Space Station Deep Space Nine!

Congratulations to both of you!

Shame about Unity, but we'll live, and we've got propecy and change to look forward to, thanks for the information.

Unity getting delayed is a good thing, for me at least.

I just finished Avatar Book II, and picked up Abyss today, so I should have caught up with everyone else by the time Unity comes out.

But yes, these are exciting times to be Niners.

Congratulations to both of you. I'm sure Unity will be worth the wait, and the Worlds of DS9 sound interesting.

Hmm... the ironic thing is that Unity will presumably feature the birth of Ben & Kasidy's child... and it got delayed by two childbirths... and what's even more ironic is that one of them was premature!!!! Well, at least this should help Danelle write about Kasidy's experiences more authentically. ;)

And wow... I get to share an anthology with a new Andrew J. Robinson story... which probably means nobody will pay much attention to my installment, but at least it should sell well.... And I get to be alphabetically first! :D

Oh gods. What will I do without Unity coming out next month? I'm so addicted I was already cruising local bookstores, just in case. But that's ok--I understand the need to care for the wee ones, so I'll just have to be patient...

And Worlds of DS9 sounds utterly cool! And a Dominion book--it'll have Odo and Weyoun. Oh, I hope I hope I hope.

All those new books...such good news. But the best news of all is that babies Palmieri and Perry are both happy and healthy. No one could fault you the delay to Unity. Congratulations to all four of you. (Heh, grouping the four of you together makes you sound like Andorians. ;) )

Well, I guess November isn't that far off. :( (Anyway, I'm still Mission: Gamma-ing at the moment, so maybe I'll stretch out the books I have til November.)

I guess that means no new Relaunch until 2005 for us non-hardcover buying folks, since I wouldn't want to spoil Unity by reading the Worlds of Deep Space Nine first. Oh well. I'm pleased by the new projection announcements - I've always been interested in how Rom is doing as the new Grand Nagus, and there wasn't much about either him or the Ferengi in the Relaunch (Doors Into Chaos being the exception). By the way - is the Terri Osborne who will be writing in Prophecy and Change the same TerriO that posts here? If so, congratulations Terri!

Also, congratulations to yourself and Ms. Perry. You now get to look forward to sleepless nights and diaper changes - what joy! ;)

Fictitiously yours, Trent Roman
