DS9 Avatar Contest 77 - take two

Welcome to DS9 avatar contest 77!

Due to the move some adjustments to the DS9 avatar contest will have to be made. After discussing the issue with PKTrekGirl we've agreed to let you guys decide how we shall proceed.

First of all, due to the fact that vBulletin only allows one poll per thread we won't be doing actual polls anymore. Instead, we'll be doing write-in votes. So here's the first dilemma. Should you guys post your votes in here, or should you PM them to me?

The other suggestion I had was that people wouldn't be allowed to vote for their own avatars. So chime in and let me know whether you think that should be allowed or not.

So to recap, here's the info I want from you.
1) write-in votes: in thread vs. PM
2) voting for yourself: allowed / not allowed

Based on suggestions from a couple of regulars in here, I've also extended the entry phase of this contest by a week. So you can still enter new avatars for contest #77. Here's the info again:

This week's episode is Afterimage from season 7. The theme is Family & Friends, and the random theme is Size Difference.

The theme must be DS9 related, while the random theme can be from just anything. The avatars have to conform to board rules: Up to 120x120 px, 20 kb for jpg and 60 kb for gif.

You've got until Friday 8pm CET to enter your avatars. Have fun and congrats again to the winners!

Here are my votes for the future polls:

1) write-in votes: PM voting. to make the contest more suspenseful.
2) voting for yourself: not allowed becuase it will be more fair and make the contest more interesting.

^ The thing with doing the write-in votes in thread is that we might get people waiting till the end and then voting for someone that doesn't have a chance of winning (especially if the person casting the vote will be in the running to win). Now I'm not saying people voting in this thread will actually do that, but it's definitely possible.

^ I didn't think about that. Perhaps PM voting would be better and a more representative way to vote - and it could actually be more suspenceful.

I have thought it over and I'll change my vote above. :)

Sorry for making two posts in a row, but maybe there's another way to do the vote:

If you look at the Voyager AV contest, you'll see they are doing all three categories in one vote. If you combine that idea with the public poll option discussed here, we would ahve a relative secure way of conducting a fair vote for all categories without having to spam BigFoot's PM folder.

^ Yeah, that is one way of doing it. But unless Antony makes it possible to do public polls by Friday, this contest will have to be done via write-in votes. But yeah, if we can do public polls I'd be cool with doing just one big poll for all three categories.

Since I was the one coming up with it, of course I'm OK with it. ;)

ETA: You should put a note in the voting threads that the vote is public, though, so that no one can complain afterwards that he/she didn't know it will be displayed who he/she voted for.

One suggestion:

Maybe PKTrekGirl should de-sticky the old voting thread. We haven't got any new entries since starting this thread here, maybe because people see that there's already a voting thread for #77 and don't realize that we have restarted the contest.

^ I can do that. I though that the other thread was the 'official' voting thread, and that this one was a discussion thread about what we will do with the avatar contests. It is not a part of the contest itself.

But I can do that, no problem. In fact, I'll do it now. :)

Another question we should consider is whether we should allow entries with bigger file sizes now that we can wear 140x140 sized avatars on the board.

^ Do you happen to know if everyone is allowed 140x140 avatars, or just people with higher ranks? Because if everyone can, then I'm cool with it. Otherwise no.

One other thing. Due to people already having entered avatars in this contest, I was thinking we'd allow the 140x140 entries starting with contest #78.

^ It's for everyone according to TBonz (yay! :)), which is very nice for us all. :D

The other size restriction is a bit more tricky, though. Unfortunately Captains and lower ranks only get 20 kb for their gif and jpg avatars. But to be fair to them, I guess we'll have to allow them to enter bigger avatars than they're allowed to wear since the rest of us are allowed 70. What do you all think we should do about that part?

And starting from contest # 78 sounds good to me!

^ OK, so 140x140 it is (from contest $78 on of course). :) As for the size, due to the difference between the ranks (from 20KB to 70KB) I'd suggest we just keep it at 60KB (or increase it to 70KB for everyone).
