DS9 Avatar Contest 55

Belar, I'm curious to see how you made those avs with the rounded corners. I'm assuming that they are transparent gifs.

And they are completely awesome, btw, even without the corners.

Nice that you ask! :) Unfortunately the rounded corners are done in the easiest (and stupidest) of all possible ways. They just have the same color as the background (now you can imagine my fear that someone will quote one of my avatars, as the different background will reveal my trick). I know, transparent *.gif's would be the solution, but I'm an idiot with them. I tried them, but they were not really transparent then. There were always some pixels (presumably some transparent ones) that were displayed white on the edges! And that doesn't look good. On the left is an example of what I mean (its my first version of this weeks Shuttles & Runabouts theme, BTW); on the right you are seeing the difference (its the avatar I choose for this weeks contest):

I couldn't make the damn white pixels to disappear! :brickwall: Then it would be totally transparent on the corners. Maybe someone has an idea how to avoid them. As I love the rounded corners to distinguish my avatars from others (and, IMHO, rounded corners belong to 24th century Star Trek anyway), it would be great to really have them transparent. But I'm also considering to get rid of them (because they are so badly done).

BTW, nice avatars everyone! :bolian:

Belar, have you tried using a *.png? They also do transparencies as well. I tried playing around with it, as you can see.
<---------------

ETA: And yes, even the *.png shows the little lines. :p

^ Yes, I've tried *png, too. But the results were the same: White pixels on the edges (you do see them in your Nog avatar, don't you?). I think the problem is, that there are some pixels on the edges that are (for lack of a better description) half transparent/half colored. Those seem to be the pixels, that are displayed white (maybe because the computer can't decide whether it is transparent or colored). I don't know. And until I know I will probably continue and just make the corners the same color as the board background. :(

^ The only way to get rid of those white pixels on the edges is to manually delete them one by one.

^^ I will try that, thanks! But I'm wondering if the corners will really look round and not too pixeled. We'll see.

Oddly I thought .PNG images weren't permitted as avatars.

^ If you don't delete too many pixels it should look fine. If it doesn't work for you, let me know and I'll give it a try.

I've done it (as you can see <-----). And it works! :D This one really has round transparent corners, yeah! (Now I should go to bed ...)

They're allowed (I think?). However, they're limited to a smaller file size than .gifs and each time I've done one, they come out larger than the allowed file size.
