DS9 and Voyager in Chronological Order

I hate it when Star Trek makes stupid continuity mistakes. Things were flowing just fine with the order I posted above, and then we get to Move Along Home and Jake Sisko mentions that Chief O'Brien and Keiko are on Earth, ruining the flow by making it so the episode Dax HAS to happen after Q-Less and before both The Passenger and MAH even though it has a much later Stardate since their trip to Earth gets mentioned in that episode.

While TOS works surprisingly well in Stardate order (it even solves a few continuity problems -- placing "Catspaw" before "Space Seed" establishes Chekov being on the Enterprise before they find Khan), it all goes haywire from TNG on. The first season of TNG alone is all over the place, ultimately having episodes whose Stardate takes place after "Skin of Evil", but Tasha Yar is present and correct.

Which might've worked out okay.... if Tash had lasted the entire season. :p

My rule of thumb is when I've rearranged order to take subtle notes on little bits of continuity, and then string them together that way. So for example "Angel One" must come after "Heart of Glory", as in the latter the crew talk about not having heard from the Romulans in a long time whereas in the former the Enterprise is listening to reports of Romulan activity along the neutral zone. I'd also place "A Matter of Honor" from the second season after "Icarus Factor" because for Riker's condemnation of the Klingon officer not getting in touch with his father to really work effectively, Riker himself needs to have sorted out his own 'daddy issues' with Kyle.

So there are certainly more logical running orders than 'broadcast order', but it can take a bit of effort to figure them out. Stardate order often doesn't cut it. ;)

Why do so many people assume that stardates should be in consecutive order anyway? Maybe stardates follow some format we aren't privy to.

On the majority of occasions they are. And through-out the movie series they were consistent. It's not unreasonable to assume they're meant to be....

The method I described (using bits of continuity to 'fit' them into a logical order), then the stardates fly out the window anyway. I say just ignore them. ;)

Dax in DS9 and Lifesigns in Voyager are the only two instances I can think of post-TNG where Stardate mistakes were made, and if I'd been aware that Dax needed to be left where it was because of the "Mrs. O'Brien is on Earth" thing, I would've accounted for it and everything would be 'golden'.

I don't trek had it as jarring as some episodes in other series where an episode was obviously meant to be set before an episode that aired several weeks earlier as determined by dialogue, presence of a character or two, or the appearance of the set.

I've updated the first post to reflect the fact that Dax needs to be seen in production/storyline order following Q-Less and before The Passenger in spite of its Stardate.

BTW, I'm still hoping people will offer suggestions in terms of ordering DS9 Season 6/Voyager Season 4 and DS9 Season 7/Voyager Season 5.

If only there were a good plot-based reason to watch them in this order. :sigh:

I'm confused as to who/what this post is in response to.

Would it be worth their effort to? No offense (sincerely), but you seem...unreceptive to alterations to your chronology even if given a good reason to.

I don't think I've given any indication that I'm 'unreceptive' to the idea of altering my chronology, but I personally like the idea of watching things by Stardate as much as possible, especially since I think it gives the 'truest' representation of the way the narrative is intended to unfold/flow given that, aside from Dax and Lifesigns, there are very few instances where Stardates aren't consistently ascending.

You still have Basics 1 and 2 split months apart based on info from a VHS cover, even though the episodes themselves make it clear they go basically back-to-back.

And Tasha coming back to life in TNG. ;)

Sorry for the double post, but I'm considering adding the TNG episodes

I'm not discounting that; I'm just choosing to believe in the veracity of the Stardates I have for those particular episodes, even if onscreen evidence suggests that I shouldn't.

Sorry for the double post, but I was able to figure out for myself a chronological viewing order for DS9's final 2 seasons and the 4th and 5th seasons of Voyager, and figured I'd share it.

I'm almost finished with watching Season 1 of DS9, but the irony is that, even after having sat down and compiled the Viewing Order I posted in this thread, I've ended up watching the season in a combination of Production Order and Air Airdate Order, and am thinking about redoing the Viewing Order in this thread as a result, figuring out how to view the seasons simultaneously by Production/Airdate instead of Stardate.
