Drug Songs

I just remembered this one from Carole King.

"Pusher" by Steppenwolf.

My favorite drug song was written by Hoyt Axton and performed by Steppenwolf . . . "The Pusher".

Correct. That song was actually written and originally performed by a country singer: Hoyt Axton.

Axton (the dad in "Gremlins," btw) also wrote and originated the anti-drug song Snowblind Friend.

No No Song: Ringo Starr

Also originally by Hoyt Axton.

Axton was also known for a guest spot on WKRP in Cincinnati, where he played a wannabe country singer in love with Loni Anderson. At the end of the show he performed another (albeit more light hearted) song about a pusher: Della and the Dealer.

Also, looking over the thread I'm surprised no one's mentioned Lou Reed and the Velvet Underground. Half their catalog was drug songs, including (perhaps most famously) Heroin.

You also had, off the top of my head:
Waiting for the Man
Run Run Run
All Tomorrow's Parties
White Light White Heat

And that's just the VU stuff. Reed also had (again, off the top of my head):
Street Hassle (listen for Springsteen at the 9:00 minute mark, btw)
Caroline Says
And, of course, Walk on the Wild Side (which is mostly about sex but does mention Valium)

Not If You Were the Last Junkie on Earth by The Dandy Warhols

I never thought you'd be a junkie because heroin is so passe.
But today, if you think that I don't know about depression and emotional pain,
You're insane, or you're a fool who hasn't paid attention to a word that I say.
In a way, I can't help but feel responsible, I always knew that you were insane
With your pain, but I never thought you'd be a junkie because heroin is so passe, hey.

Heroin is so passe, hey.
Herion is so passe, hey, hey.
Aaaah

So passe nowadays.
You never thought you'd get addicted, just be cooler in an obvious way
I could say, shouldn't you have got a couple piercings and decided maybe that you were gay,
In a way, I can't help but feel responsible, I always knew that you were insane
With your pain, but I never thought you'd be a junkie because heroin is so passe, hey.

Heroin is so passe, hey.
Herion is so passe, hey, hey.
Ah ah ah ah, aaah, aaah, aaaah
Ah ah ah ah, aaah, aaah, aaaah
Ah ah ah ah, aaah, aaaaaaah

Heroin is so passe, hey.
Heroin is so passe, hey
Heroin is so passe, hey, hey.
Ah ah ah ah, aaah, aaah, aaaah,
Ah ah ah ah, aaah, aaah, aaaah,
Hey hey hey hey heyyy, heyyy, heyyyyy

This twisted little ditty by Tom Lehrer was considered edgy, “sick” humor back in the day.
