Drill, Baby, Drill

So Prez Obama is going to begin offshore oil drililng....how is that helping the environment? If we pull more finite resources out of the Earth, we won't have the need to refine alternative energy vehciles and we'll be right backwhere we started.

Since when has there not been public support for alternative energy research?

In any case, that's pretty much what cap and trade is meant to do--make fossil fuels cost prohibitive and make green energy more attractive. It just creates a controlled transition rather than an uncontrollable crisis.

Money would be better invested in refining alternative energy cars and not oil.

You do realize it's possible to do both at the same time, right?

as long as we have ample supplies ofoil and the prices for gas are low,the urgency is not there, neitheris the public support.

So what, we should wait until we run out of the most easily accessible oil and then turn to green energy?

We either go full oil for full alternative. turning our money towards drililng more oil and taking those fundsaway from alternative energy is counter-productive. Until gas prices go to 10.00 per gallon joe public wants oil not hydrogen cars

Why not do both? It would be far too costly to convert everything to alternative energy at the same time. And if the public doesn't want these hydrogen cars, then explain to me why hybrids have been selling so well.

So now that it's gone down, we should just forget that it ever happened and that it could and will, rise again? I'm sorry man, but your logic is flawed.

You are going to still need plastics. Ironically, there was a plan to turn oil into foodstuffs. What you are doing is moving biomass back to the surface. Something to consider. The worst weapon to the ecology is not the drill bit but the plow.

A drill head can be used for new concept geothermal plants. Carbon can be sequestered and used to force oil out. If you were to drill in ANWR, you would leave behind small holes. You see, when you get energy from a buried three dimentional resource like oil, that has minimal surface impact. On the other hand, if you grow your fuel on the surface (maximal surface impact), you have that compete with foodstuffs.

Were all cars to start burning hydrogen today--the water vapor coming from them is actually a more severe greenhouse gas than CO2. Replace Venus' atmosphere with water vapor, and it would get hotter. Now we think the hydrologic cycle would work faster to remove excess water than the carbon cycle does to remove excess CO2, what with stomata changes. Mammoth mountain leaks a lot of CO2 (Lake Nyos style--but without the lake to bottle it up seltzer style) to where trees die, and yet, we have this:

The fastest way to reduce emissions is to get warheads off ICBMs, go all nuclear, and mandate all electric cars. Radon gas shows that nature doesn't abide by NRC/EPA standards itself--and that is what Yucca mountain is for. Forget helium three, just plact fission plants on the moon and beam power back.

Nature iself has been known to produce meltdowns all on its own

I think that technophobia is what is going to kill us myself.

I say good for them. If it's a national resource of ours, why not use it? I'm for anything that will drive down my gas costs.

Alternative energy is a worthy cause, I'm just sick of the green hippie soft science tree humpers that get in an uproar over the stuff. You know the kind, they're the ones who celebrated earth hour last weekend.

Hi Guys

I am currently conducting an academic research study on Star Trek Fandom and would really like everyone to participate in a short online questionnaire about start trek for the study.

U first.

Unfortunatly I'm one of thouse green science hippy types and I've got to say, the more money we pump into oil the later we are leaving the switch over to other energy types, why not make a push for it now when we still have something of a safety net?
