How would you rate Dredd?

As great as Dredd's success on DVD/Blu-ray/Netflix/whatever is, I'm still not too confident we'll get a sequel. Even if we do, isn't there a better chance it'll be straight to home video without a theatrical release? Not only could that hurt the budget, it's possible they may not even get Karl Urban back which would be a great tragedy, IMO.

I don't know, maybe I'm just unnecessarily cynical. I do hope it gets a theatrical sequel, I'm just not holding my breath.

Well there's still the possibility of doing a slightly lower budget sequel set in the Cursed Earth, and you could still top/tail it in Mega City 1...and maybe the last shot of the film could see some guy in a city block dying as a skeletal hand enters his chest whilst off screen we hear a voice. "the crime is life...the sentence is death..."

 Ok I'm dreaming I know, but still...If they could make a sequel for the same or less money it would be bound to do better at the box office given the positive vibe the film's now getting on DVD etc (you would hope). The question is would any improvement be enough for a third film?

All very hypothetical I know...

I caught this with my girlfriend earlier, and we both really enjoyed it! I'm looking forward to getting the movie in bluray (as soon as I get a player). :)

RE: sequel.

Never give up hope. They're making another Riddick movie after the last one bombed. All things are possible.

Just wondering if it would really be that bad if replaced Urban? May do it just for budgetary reasons. Underwhelmed by this one, but Thirlby made impressive debut and would be interested to see sequel with broader scope.

All on one floor? ;)

... Of course, some shows do courtroom episodes as bottle shows, but I doubt one could get away with keeping the helmet on in there...

In the Judge system, the people are represented by two separate, yet equally important groups: The Judges, who enforce the law, and...actually, never mind, it's only one group. :p These are its stories.

DOINK-DOINK!

Or they could do a movie about Dredd walking the beat in Buffalo. Might not be terribly cinematic, but hey, "gritty realism" is in these days, right? :p

Well, when you put it that way, I guess there is no good reason why we can't have a Dredd sequel.

Personally, I feel Urban is Dredd and his performance in the movie is easily a good portion of the reason why the movie rocked so much.

Yeah! Just like the Serenity sequel that totally happened.....:(

I'd put the chances of a Serenity sequel happening has having moved up a bit. Granted through no actual means of it's own merit but still, I'd place it back into the wait and see category.

I'd agree, I think he completely nailed Dredd, and he has age on his side as well if sequels did appear. It would be nice to have Thirlby back as well, maybe with a bit of the comic book Anderson's humour thrown in.

I guess the downside to a sequel is that, what might have been expected to build on what came before, might need a similarly tight focus to the first one for budgetry reasons.

Hence why the Cursed Earth might be a good idea, lots of desert in South Africa that could double for an irradiated wasteland and all that.

My wife bought me the Bluray for my birthday last week. I figured I'd watch a little before bed, and ended up watching the whole thing. I *love* this movie.

Urban really does nail Dredd, at least to my mind. Im not a huge fan, but I read 2000AD as a kid, and Dredd was by far the highlight. I've always liked the character, and I think Urban just hit the right notes.

I'd agree that the Stallone version did a better job with the look of Mega City One, and yes, the comics could be pretty bizarre. But Stallone really didn't get the character. Or if he did, he didn't bring that out in his performance. That said, I liked the more grounded take of the Urban version, so no real complaints from me.

Thirlby, by the way was brilliant. I'd never seen her in anything before, but I'll be watching out for her in the future.

I really hope we get a sequel. And I'd be very disappointed if we didn't get both Urban and Thirlby back.

I do have one small complaint. The extras on the disc were pretty poorly put together. I guess they were trying to save a few extra pennies there.

I'd say the chances are still pretty slim for a Serenity sequel. Even if some bean counter decided to take another gamble and greenlit it, there's a good possibly they couldn't get all the cast. Hell, Nathan Fillion currently has a popular show he's committed to.

^^^^
I know but Castle is in year 5. It'll likely go 7, maybe 8.

He wouldn't be the first TV lead to be given time from his main contract to film a movie.
With Joss's current new power status in the industry I'm just suggesting that a Serenity sequel could be moved from the "never going to happen" column into "wait and see, but still doubtful" column.

Gina Torres is also on Suits. I've never seen it so I don't know if she's a regular, but she does seem to be a pretty big part of it, so it might be a challenge to get her back too.

Just saw Dredd this morning. I loved it. I thought it had cool characters, and great action in an interesting setting. I thought the whole cast did a great job, espcially the three leads. It was actually the first movie I've ever watched in Blu-Ray on my new HD-TV that I got last month. I have to say it looked great in that format.
I rated it excellent.
