Dragon Age: Origins - Anyone playing?

Based on his accent, I thought he was Spanish.

The original justification for inventing fake Chinese (going to the trouble of hiring a Sinologist to help to create the language) was that they didn't want to ruin the fantasy... but as someone who is a Chinese speaker, it was extremely frustrating to hear something that almost made sense but never actually coalesced into anything meaningful.

I know that Western gamers will never play a game subtitled - in the same way that foreign movies and TV shows never get aired here (they're dubbing Yakuza 3 for christ's sale)- but I would be pretty disappointed if a sequel set in one of the foreign countries ends up with everyone speaking English with fey French accents or in fake grunts meant to simulate their version of French.

Antiva was partly based on the city-states of medieval and Renaissance Italy, not on Spain.
Yes, but:
they decided to have Zevran sound like Antonio Banderas. :p
So fake Spanish it is.

The qunari and Tevinter are loosely based on the Islamic world and the Byzantine empire, and the handful of either in the game don't bother to have Arabic/Turkic accents in the former case or Greek in the latter, for whatever reason.

Mix and match, they do, and apparently Antiva is a Spanish-speaking Italian city state. Fantasy, roll with it.
True enough. I read that the kingdom of Nevarra was based on Spain, but that doesn't mean they have to sound Spanish. I also should have remembered Master Ignacio and Cesar--both Antivan like Zevran, but with Spanish names and accents.

Morrigan, Leliana, Alistair, and Zevran can all be romanced within the game.
I romanced Zevran, but that's as far as that went, and that more or less was an accident (having failed with Alistair and not knowing Leliana was bisexual, well, why not?)

Also what does this have to do with everyone being bi?

All of my main character romanced both Zevran and Leliana, hence all of them being bi. :p

I went with Morrigan over Leilana. Leilana is too possessive.

That meant I missed out on the threesome at the Pearl. :(

I find it funny that if you're an asshole, you can somehow get a foursome. I have to imagine it's not animated in any way though.

So I've been reading the Dragon Age novels by David Gaider, just started the second novel titled The Calling which features King Maric and Duncan the Grey Warden venturing into the Deep Roads to prevent the Darkspawn from finding an Old God and releasing the Archdemon (presumably these events lead directly to the Blight are characters struggle through in the game itself).

Anyway, a character we meet in the 2nd chapter is a talking Darkspawn which sounded a bit familiar to me, so I went back to rewatch the trailer for the new expansion and....It's the same character in the book as we will be facing down in Awakenings in a couple of months! Very cool stuff!

Okay I just went and bought the ultimate edition since I'm about Mass Effected out for now (yes I'm late to the party, so sue me!) and there's something that's been bothering me; for some reason, when they're holstered, all the characters' weapons seem to be suspended about six inches away from their backs. I just wonder if it's a known glitch or if my copy is a bit off?

Really enjoying the game though, despite the whole pointy clicky combat (which is exactly what put me off KotOR) and I already like it much better than Oblivion. From what I gather this game is huge compared to most RPGs. I'm still n what I think are the very early stages. That is to say I've just gotten to the village after being rescued by the crazy witch person.

It's the graphics, AFAIR. I've seen moustaches and hair stuck in armor and stuff like that ...
Great game anyway. Be sure to play the expansion too.

^It's the "Ultimate Edition" so I assume most or all of the DLC and expansion packs are all bundled in. I know it was a bloody huge download, something like 20-odd gigs!

Pseudobundled. They include the content, but it's still locked; you're only given one key, so if you're on PC and there's more than one gamer in the house ( = more than one Bioware account), only one person can use it.

On 360, this isn't a problem.

Not a concern. I'll be the only one interesting in playing this. ;)

I've just gotten to the first camp and am trying to figure out how to give gifts. It took me a while to suss out how to talk to Claudia Black and I managed to earn quite a bit of her disapproval.

Incidentally, I'm playing as a female human noble rogue and I'm going to be very strict with myself with not reloading quicksaves to "fix" mistakes. I think it'd be more interesting to play the role and live with the consequences than try to artificially reshape the story.

Anyone have any general tips on combat or party balance? At the moment I'm favouring a mix of Morrigan, that big warrior bloke I freed from his cage and my war dog. I'd like to have the bard woman rather than the dog I think but I keep loosing my whole party when enemies just swarm us, so I think I need the extra muscle.

Oh and is there any way to fix that thing with the floaty weapons? It's really distracting in cut-scenes.

Just FYI - it looks like all the DLC is on sale on the 360 at half off, with the exception of the latest Morrigan DLC.
Seems like an odd push though, since anyone playing the game now probably bought the Ultimate Edition anyway... but I'm not complaining!

Thanks for the heads-up, I haven't bought any of the DLCs yet, so I might give them a try. Well, as soon as my buddy gets around to send my copy of DA:O back to me
