Dragon Age: Origins - Anyone playing?

^
Orlais probably has those. Remember, if you have a continential European accent, you're bisexual. Heterosexuality is confined to the English speaking world.

Well, France and Spain are clearly more fun than England after all.

There's a small part of me that thinks it would be funny if the DA world was connected to the JE world and there are a bunch of Asians running around this world.

But every character I've made so far is bi, and none of my Fereldan party members seem to think it at all odd, so either Fereldan has its share as well, or Orlais and Antiva are really notorious for it.

You know, I was thinking the same exact thing

*continues to wish for a Jade Empire sequel*

I remember in JA there was an "overbearing white dude" that you competed against in some quest... I'm sure they can retcon it so that he's from a future-steampunky Fereldan.

Ah, yes. Sir Roderick Ponce von Fontlebottom the Magnificent Bastard*, voiced by John Cleese. He was awesome. :techman:

Count me in as one of those hoping desperately for a Jade Empire sequel someday.

*Yes, I quoted that from memory. :p

Eh, Jade Empire had some good ideas, but needed an overhaul is more ways than one. The linearity was glaring in the face of other Bioware RPGs, and I hated that you could only have one party member at a time, and that there was no reason to ever actually have them in combat mode, when your mana or stamina ran down so fast that you absolutely needed their support mode boosts.

Well, yeah, it had some technical flaws. I don't love the game for its flawed combat system, or its linearity, or its relatively short story compared to BioWare's other entries, but the setting, the atmosphere, and most of the execution of the story made up for a lot of the game's faults, IMO.

I find that helps if you think of it as a button masher fighting game rather than an RPG  When I first got it I was also a little disappointed that alot of the meat that they had in KOTOR was removed in Jade Empire. That's one of the reasons why I really want a sequel, there is room for improvement on such an awesome concept

That being said, there were some moments in Dragon Age where I was getting a strong sense of Jade Empire deja vu, like when you're underground and surrounded by ghosts in the Orzimar section or when you're in the orphanage haunted by spirits. very creepy yet very awesome

My only hope is that if they ever did the game again, they'd give up the pigeon Chinese and just go full on Mandarin/Cantonese/whatever. I understand they wanted to create a "fantasy world" that isn't based in reality... but by that logic, Leliana should speak fake French and Zevran should speak fake Spanish.

I don't mind the combat system, but they would probably need to bring in some people who have worked on action games at this point.

It'd also be funny to have DA magic/swords vs JE Kung Fu.

There are probably Asians somewhere out there in Thedas; being a psuedo-medieval period probably somewhere past the qunari lands. Maybe the Archdemons there look like Chinese dragons!

But every character I've made so far is bi,
Wait what?

I've been playing this wrong, clearly,
Considering hot Loghain/Morrigan action was all I saw in this game.

Zevran should speak fake Spanish.

Or just have them speak French and Spanish. They can be bilingual.

What? The Fereldans are speaking English all the time!

Eh. But then we'd wonder why the Dwarves always speak English, surely they'd have their own language (the Elves are struggling with a post-slavery identity, it makes sense they don't speak Elvish).

But yeah, a game with foreign languages isn't such a bad idea. KOTOR already touched on it, though there the 'languages' were just looped alien noises so they didn't have to worry about getting V.O.s for those lines (lazy dastards), but then again subtitles are not as easy to sell to your average gamer as sex and violence, so I dunno.

^Clearly you are playing wrong.

Morrigan, Leliana, Alistair, and Zevran can all be romanced within the game. Leliana and Zevran go both ways, so they can be romanced by either a male or female main character. Alistair only by a female, and Morrigan only by a male. Just be nice to them, flirtatious when possible and give them some gifts (each character has specific ones that give them a lot of approval.) Zevran is the easiest to romance for either gender, while Leliana is probably the hardest.

It's pretty obvious Zevran's a big slut, but I romanced Leliana without even trying to do so. I guess the decisions I made over the course of the game really appealed to her?

Well, Leliana will only offer to sleep with you if you get her meter up (if only real life worked that way? har har) to 100%. The game makes it very easy to do so with gifts though - even if you play an evil character and never bring her along, you can probably find enough things to make her like you.

I romanced Zevran, but that's as far as that went, and that more or less was an accident (having failed with Alistair and not knowing Leliana was bisexual, well, why not?)

Also what does this have to do with everyone being bi?

Ah, ok. I was giving her all the Andraste gifts since that made the most sense to me given her backstory, so that definitely played into it as well. I was just trying to get all that junk out of my limited inventory space.

Maybe they do, but we just never hear it because they don't need to speak their native languages in Ferelden. And I highly doubt they actually speak English in Ferelden; more likely their native language is something that sounds like a mishmash of the different Gaelic languages, it's just been translated into English for the players' sake (sort of like Westron in The Lord of the Rings, or Basic in Star Wars). Looking at it from that viewpoint, the characters who spoke English in Jade Empire probably weren't literally speaking English, but whatever they called the Jade Empire's common language. Perhaps the Mandarin to Tho Fan's Cantonese.

Oh, and Zevran would be speaking fake Italian, not fake Spanish. Antiva was partly based on the city-states of medieval and Renaissance Italy, not on Spain. Which kind of makes me wonder why they decided to have Zevran sound like Antonio Banderas. :p

Probably a mishmash of some Gaelic and Old English. Ferelden is basically pseudo-England (arls = earls, thank you, I'll be here all day) with some Gaelic touches.

Yes, but:

So fake Spanish it is.

The qunari and Tevinter are loosely based on the Islamic world and the Byzantine empire, and the handful of either in the game don't bother to have Arabic/Turkic accents in the former case or Greek in the latter, for whatever reason.

Mix and match, they do, and apparently Antiva is a Spanish-speaking Italian city state. Fantasy, roll with it.
