Dragon Age - Discussion Thread

Mass Effect 4 confirmed.

Well they were originally going to make it multiplayer only
Source?

They didn't seem to have any trouble releasing both major story based DLC and regular significant multiplayer DLC with Mass Effect 3, I can't see it being all that more complicated with DAI. Plus every Bioware game since ME1 has had at least *some* DLC story. Indeed, since DAO & ME2 it's been a consistent part of their business model.

Also...
...given how things ended, it seems like a pretty clear set-up for DLC.

The project starting life as a multiplayer spin-off hardly equates to them focusing exclusively on MP DLC. They clearly invested a lot of time and resources into the main story campaign and they know full well that's where their core audience is, so they're hardly going to eschew it all together.
Indeed, even two months after launch the MP content is decidedly lacklustre.

Thanks! I had missed that, fascinating.

It could explain in part why they might be behind in their story DLC schedule compared to what we would usually expect at this point in the product life cycle. (At least in terms of communicating DLC plans, there is no doubt that they are in development.)

As I recall, EA's previous CEO loudly and publicly declared that single player games were dead and they would never do another one. One of the reasons he's now the previous CEO, as I understand it.

So it stands to reason that any single player game they've recently released or will release in the near future was intended to be multiplayer only at some point.

So yeah, Mass Effect 4 will probably have some leftover MMO elements, unfortunately.

So I watched Dawn of the Seeker tonight, the events of which Cassandra recounts when you talk to her in Haven. Not bad, actually, much better than Mass Effect's Paragon Lost (and the animation is WAY better.) Makes me want to roll a male Trevelyan mage to romance her now. :D

I actually didn't mind that they used a different voice actor for Cassandra, as her accent tends to really grate on me in the games.

^ The Cassandra romance is really, really well done (yes, for a video game). There is a bit of cheese, but in a likeable, intentional way.

She's easily my favorite character, I mean Iron Bull is great and all, but depth and complexity are not what makes him a great character (mostly it's FPJ's great voicework, to be quite honest).

Okay, I'm finally ready to finish playthrough #1 after 150 hours or so because fuck those missing shards

For those of you who're already done with the game, how long does the final main quest ("The Final Piece") take in terms of playtime, roughly?

FYI:

Even an Inquisitor needs some downtime for relaxing once in a while. If you've indulged in the opportunity at Skyhold's tavern to enjoy a break from the demons and Venatori, chances are you've heard some of the bard's lovely songs. Although bards do perform to entertain travelers, they also serve a greater purpose: to carry the tales of triumph and tragedy across the land.

We've received many inquiries from our fans asking where they can get these songs, and we're thrilled that you're enjoying them as much as we do. As our way of saying thank you for being the awesome community that you are, we're excited to announce that for the next two weeks, you can download these songs from a desktop computer free of charge!

As an added bonus for all of you musically inclined folks, we're also releasing the sheet music for each track. Now you can perform your own versions of these haunting tavern tunes—and when you do, you should enter our Fan Celebration Contest!

Grab your free download before February 9, 2015. Shortly after that, we'll make them available for sale on many popular digital platforms. Thank you once again for being a part of the Dragon Age community!

Sweet! :D

SPCTRE: I found everything after the Temple of Mythal to go by very very quickly, almost shockingly so.

Nice of them. I tended to hear parts of them on the way to other things in the tavern and didn't listen as closely as I could on my first playthrough.

I do remember getting the first few lines of the Sera one stuck in my head though.

Yeah, I finished it last night. I'd say I have to agree, it was surprisingly short, but I didn't dislike it - some people made it seem like it was a huge letdown.

I have to say though, I'm glad I'm done with the game for the time being, I was starting to feel a bit of open-world fatigue between this, Destiny, and catching up on AC: Black Flag.

In that sense, DAI having a definitive end (unlike MMO-inspired games like Destiny) is sort of a relief - a sentiment I couldn't relate to when I was younger and had more free time

Not a let down so much as something of an anti-climax.

Also, did you stay until after the end credits?...

...because that was anything but a definitive end. Hell, it was so wide open you could fly a dragon through it! ;)

I think a lot of the disappointment comes from the realisation that Corypheus was ultimately a let down as a villain. From Skyhold onwards we only hear about his actions and plans second hand, defeating him at every turn like he's some 80's cartoon villain, until he's quit easily killed off in a less than spectacular boss fight. One I might add that was no where near a good as the one in the DA2 Legacy DLC.

At least there you get more a sense as to his motivations and some depth fo character. He's a true believer let down by his god, left cursed and sealed away for centuries only to awake to find the world he knew all but gone. There's some real tragedy and pathos there which DAI (aside from one or two easily missed codex entries) fails to really take advantage of.

Of course the reality is that he was never meant to be a main character in the same way the Logain, the Arishok, Meredith, Saren, TIM etc. were. He's a cardboard cut-out meant to drive the plot of the world of Thedas forwards, only to be disposed of in time for the bait & switch reveal after the credit roll.

At first, my main issue with Corypheus as the Big Bad wasn't so much that he wasn't fleshed out more (which you're absolutely right, he wasn't) but that we already knew him from DA2 Legacy.

He is linked to some very interesting, key parts of the lore though (Golden City stuff), so in the end I was fine with him.

Yeah I like Corypheus just fine as the big bad. He was a dangling plot thread that needed to be dealt with and provided a powerful adversary that (albeit mostly behind-the-scenes) took some real effort to defeat. Plus what he did to the Grey Wardens - from a player perspective especially - was a major blow. I didn't have any problem with his motivation - it wasn't as complex as in Legacy, but he'd basically moved past that point of despair.

On my first run through, I'm about ready to go hunting for one of the
Samson in this case
.

However, I've just run into a little bug which is somewhat annoying. I've just upgraded my graphics card, but now the sound has an intermittent issue. The sound is sometimes ok, but at other times sounds like it's coming from a long way down a tunnel. It's apparently a known issue so I'm going to have a look round at how to fix it before I continue.

Well, I finished my first run and am planning my second at the moment.

Overall, I enjoyed the game and didn't have a problem with either Corphy or the ending.

As to the end
Got a softer more diplomatic Leliana for divine.
The mages circle is dissolved and form the College of Enchanters.
Celine ruled alone but remains grateful towards the inquisition. Briala plots her return.
The Grey Wardens emerge from the shadows to help, though Weisshaupt falls silent.
The Inquisition and it's web of influence is felt throughout the world. (I thought I'd used the Forces option too much, but apparently not)

For some reason I managed to harden Leliana, which is strange since as far as I can tell I didn't do any of the things that are supposedly meant to cause her to go that way. A bug perhaps? Either way it's annoying since she romanced my Warden and I'd really like those two to reconnect.

Oh and if you'd like to have some idea as to what's up with Weisshaupt, I suggest reading the most recent tie-in novel 'Last Flight'. Can't wait to see how that plays out in the next game/DLC.
