Dr. Who for the Uninitiated

And then if they weren't such "greedy bastards" then they wouldn't be able to afford to make the programmes which to me is a far worse option.

I thought BBC America wasn't affiliated with the 'proper' BBC?

But I'm still not happy with how they and the Sci-Fi channel both cut big chunks out of the episodes.

The majority of ads shown during BBC America are commercials promoting the channel itself. I don't see how they can earn revenue if they run commercials of themselves. How exactly does that increase revenue?

It doesn't and I never said it did, I just meant in general terms when it comes to the relationship between advertising revenue and programme production.

Just floating the question out there in case someone knows the answer; there are no accusations being made.:)

Honestly, I think "Smith and Jones" is a better introduction to the Doctor Who concept.

"Smith & Jones" in of itself is a great episode and marginally better than "Rose", however it introduces arguably the weakest companion and certainly the most annoying family (with the exception of Tish Jones).

What do you mean? Rose introduced Jackie Tyler, the most annoying family in the history of television. She wasn't even in Smith & Jones.

I wouldn't mind a companion where we don't have to see the family every few episodes. Like the good old days. Hopefully future writers and producers won't be such Coronation Street fans.

All of which is an entirely separate question from how well it introduces the Doctor Who format.

Jackie wasn't anywhere near as annoying, and frankly distasteful as Francine.

I don't think there's anything wrong with giving a companion a family back home, I thought giving Rose one was quite a novel touch for Who and it allowed the show to focus on the people left behind when a companion heads off with the Doctor.

But...

As with romance, which I don't have a huge ssue with, I don't want to see the same thing with every character, and that's one of RTD's flaws, there was more than a touch of repetition to Who. (I only forgive him because he gave us Wilf in the end)

Spearhead from Space is as good a place as anywhere imho..

It's one of only a handful of intentional jumping-on points, so yeah, that's a good choice too.

Really intentional jumping on points would be:

An Unearthly Child (the first episode, anyway - and actually I like the pilot version better)
Spearhead From Space
Robot
The Leisure Hive (but I wouldn't recommend it)
The TVM
Rose
Smith And Jones
