DR. Soong?

GalaxyClass1701

Captain
Captain
I am rewatching season 4 (figures right when the show is getting good they cancel it) and they never really say who he is. Is he supposed to be Soong from TNG's father, grandfater or Uncle?

If you're in the middle of the Augments arc... just wait for it.

I am passed it but maybe I missed it does he come back after the three parter?
He tells Archer at the end of the arc that he's going to work on creating artificial life (or something along those lines... that should tell you everything you need to know). ;)

No. I believe they just call him Arik Soongh. They can't say his relationship with Noonien Soongh since they can't read his future. He predates him by 200 years, though, so do the math.

I always wondered the due to Arik's link to the Eugenics Wars, Noonian Soong's name wasn't just coincidence and was actually named after Khan.

Actually he said that he was going to start the work but it most likely would have to be finished by someone else.

It was just a coincidence. WHen the chacter of Dr. Noonian Soong was created, he had nothing to do with genetics. That was created for Enterprise.

IIRC, Gene ROddenberry had an old friend from his cop days whom he wanted to get in touch with, who had a very similar name, so he named a couple of characters that with hope that it would encourage his old aquaintance to get in touch with him.

No, I knew that. I meant it was an idea that could be applied retroactively in light of existing canon.

Yeah, it's called a retcon. Archer IV is an example of one if you believe the text in IAMDpt2

Arik Soong was supposed to be Noonien's great-grandfather. Wasn't this canonically established when the episodes first aired? I'm surprised people are still wondering about this.

Arik Soong really was supposed to be Noonien's great-grandfather. However, there's no actual canon evidence about that (Do we know for sure that most of the Trek characters ever had sex? In some cases, two characters might have just been sharing a bed for whatever reason.). If they changed their mind and wanted to establish that Arik and Noonien were the same person it wouldn't be a canon violation.

No, but it would be stupid. I think it's safe to say that, barring later contradiction, they are related (great-grandfather works for me).

Actually, given how Arik Soong looks IDENTICAL to the later Dr Soong I think there' room to say that he cloned himself and the clones carried on his work.

Yes it was. People have short memories.

Even Trekkers it seems. If some of US can't keep our details straight, what hope was there for the casual audience?

Umm, "canonically established" would require that the fact be mentioned or shown in one of the episodes or movies. Arik Soong's relationship to Noonien Soong never was.

True, but Coto and one of the Beebs said he was Noonien's great-granddad. And it was heavily implied at the very end of the final episode of the Augment trilogy that Arik's cybernetics theories would be continued by "later generations," hence his descendant. Data's pop.
