It seems like a lot of the adoration people have for Doug Jones is unearned in this role. People like him because he did CGI/mo-cap characters in Hellboy and Fantastic Four. Kind of like a poor man's version of Andy Serkis
How can Doug Jones simultaneously be low profile and the reason everyone loves Saru? Not an insult. Everyone's raving: "Saru... it's Doug Jones, guys!!! Doug Jones is amazing. Therefore the new character is great." I don't think it's a great character.
He is kind of a lower-profile Andy Serkis-type. There, I didn't call him a poor man's Serkis this time.
Seriously, that may be a reason among us who have been following this show for months before it was released, but it seems like most people like this character but have no clue who it is (you know, just like all of Doug Jones' other roles).
