Don't replicators make Garak's tailor business redundant?

Why would anyone risk service aboard a starship that is seeing several hostile encounters every year? What would be the incentive of working to obtain rank? Would anyone want to live out their lives in space without retirement, a family or any possessions?
Compensation, monetary or othewise, doesn't at all explain all the possible motivations. It becomes simplistic when we only talk about career/job choices in terms of basic needs. For some people, the work itself is something they want to do. Where would an evolutionary biologist go in the 24th century to get data and results? Would such a person, in any century, be strictly motivated by compensation?

No more than a person would be solely motivated by job satisfaction. Financial compentsation would be a part of a overall mix, for some the prime component.

For others less important, but still needed to live while chasing their lives dreams.

:)

As Sisko used to say, "do you know how difficult it is to find a tailor who can fit a suit to conceal a piece of artillery?"
Oh, that was Hawk. Sorry! They look very similar. :)

Starfleet Officers typically wear a adult onesie with a zipper down the from, it's a single step away from wearing a bag. Deanna's lovely blue dress (given the way it fits) was unlikely to have come from a replicator.

I'd be willing to write off almost any prominate young female in any remotely form fitting outfit as Hollywood being Hollywood.

Some seem to think eveyone would want Garak's goods if they were free, but they aren't free. Even if they cost no currency, they cost time. And time is money to some people.

Not everyone, just a lot (enough to make it so that supply is unable to meet demand) at which point, those with money take precedence (as they always have)

At which point someone takes precedence. Doesn't have to be the person with the most money - Garak could easily give precedence to the people he likes or the people whose names end in Y. Or simply have a long waiting list.

Also, how much demand can there really be for a tailor's services in a place like DS9? The Bajorans by and large are going to get their clothes on Bajor - not from a Cardassian. Starfleet officers typically wear uniforms 90% of the time. And most alien visitors don't stick around long enough to need a tailor.

The Bajorans are going to fly all the way to Bajor with their clothes just because they lost a few pounds?

Bajor is a few hours away. People do that for an afternoon shopping trip all the time. Plus the Bajorans are very attached to their planet to begin with. I'd imagine the majority of them take at least semi-regular trips to Bajor anyway.

Flying to Bajor isn't cheap: Shakar's aide wanted Shakar to make transportation subsidies an issue. And neither Bajor nor the station are in fixed positions in space. They orbit, presumably at different rates. It may be three hours "by runabout" to the Chief, but I doubt Sisko let's residents have open access to Federation spacecraft.

Non-replicated goods would still be valued, I would think particularly by Bajorans, as well as other aliens. I recall how the Enterprise crew were enamored of the fabrics in Encounter at Farpoint. I love the outfits on aliens in DS9. Quark's jackets are the bomb.

As for economy, I do think demonetized systems are a logical development when populations reach a certain load. All the western countries have the beginnings of this in their healthcare and social services.
