Donny's TOS Enterprise Interiors

Re: Donny's TOS Enterprise Interiors

Taking a break at the moment, as I've been bitten by the Bat-Bug and am currently working on a model of the '66 Batmobile to expand my portfolio outside of Trek-related stuff., and to also expand my modeling skill set. I'll return to McCoy's office as soon as I'm done, give or take a few weeks. Cheers!

I hope you'll share that project with us as well. The '66 Batmobile still remains my favorite...primarily because it's an actual car. There's a company in Vegas producing incredible versions of it. If I ever won the lottery I'd be tooling around in one, for sure. :-)

Re: Donny's TOS Enterprise Interiors

I miss the TOS stuff. I'd like to see unseen areas of the original Enterprise. Just sayin. Everything you do is cool.

Re: Donny's TOS Enterprise Interiors

All righty....

Forgive the long break. It was needed. Didn't finish the Batmobile I'd started, but got a good bit of work done and will probably complete some time later (which you can view here, if interested). More importantly, I learned some new modelling techniques which will come in handy when crafting some of the more detailed and curvy shaped models down the line for these Trek projects.

I also got side-tracked by a new space-flight simulator MMO called Elite: Dangerous. Had fun playing that for a while, but am anxious to return to work on the TWOK-era sickbay.

While I'm working on some more knick-knacks for McCoy's desk, I wanted to ask you guys something. The subject in question is McCoy's office chair in TWOK, seen below:

Most of the chair is, of course, covered by McCoy, but I thought the sides of the chair bear resemblance to the TNG command chairs:

What do you guys think? Could it be that the TNG command chairs were actually modified versions of the chairs found in McCoy's office? A head-rest and straps on the side were obviously added in TNG if so, but unless anyone can pinpoint the exact type of chair that McCoy is sitting in, I'd say they're the same. It also appears that the seat and back cushions were probably modified from the original version as well, but the sides look very similar.

(The chair in which Carol Marcus resides seems to also be of the same type, much different from the chair seen in TMP)

Thoughts?

Re: Donny's TOS Enterprise Interiors

The TNG chair backs are split all the way through (see here) whereas McCoy's chair seems not to be. The sides are certainly similar though, maybe they were bought from the same chair company? I suppose they could have just heavily modified the originals.

Re: Donny's TOS Enterprise Interiors

Looks to me that the only commonality is the faux-leather upholstery. The top "shoulder" let's say of the TNG seat is very narrow and pointed, while the McCoy one is quite a bit thicker and rounder. Also, it seems to my eye that McCoy's left arm is lying on an arm-rest which is quite lacking on the TNG seat. The chair's right side (tucking under the desk) seems to have a curve indicating it also forms an armrest--a curving aspect much higher and sharper than the lower curves on the sides of the TNG seat.

Also, if we assume Dr. Marcus is sitting in a matching seat (and why shouldn't we?) then the top of her seat is very much broader than the top end of the TNG seat.

In conclusion, I think those TWOK chairs were bought at a furniture store someplace, while the TNG chairs were custom built for the show. Given that only five or six years would have separated the TWOK sets from the TNG sets (And indeed, we all know there was a lot of recycling/repurposing) I'm willing to say that these chairs could have inspired the TNG seats, but are in fact completely separate units merely with the same covering material.

Re: Donny's TOS Enterprise Interiors

It looks like there's a glimpse of chair here in TMP:

The general shape could be right, and most likely Meyer had them cover the chair with leather or something that looked similar, as part of his general redecoration of the sets.

I'm pretty sure those aren't the same chairs. The ones in TMP are far too small compared to those in TWOK.

[EDIT] I'm almost willing to bet that the TMP office chairs (seen in your screencap above) were re-upholstered and moved to Kirk's Quarters in TWOK: http://movies.trekcore.com/gallery/albums/twokhd/twokhd1112.jpg

Re: Donny's TOS Enterprise Interiors

Oh, I could definitely see that. In which case, getting back to McCoy's office chair, I've got no clue. Given the smaller budget they had to work with, it could easily have been a rental from Modern Props or something on-hand at Paramount.

Re: Donny's TOS Enterprise Interiors

I thought maybe McCoy's chair was one of those armrest Burkes with added upholstery, but after looking at pics I think not.

Re: Donny's TOS Enterprise Interiors

According to the book Return to Tomorrow all of the furniture in TMP was custom built because they didn't want recognizable set dressing, so those chairs are likely custom made.

Are there any shots of the chair at he desk in the ward? That might be a clue as to the furnishings.

BTW, you can see a bit of Bones' desk computer in TMP lit up in this shot.

Re: Donny's TOS Enterprise Interiors

In TNG's first season, many set props from Phase II and the first four Trek films were recycled in various ways. Maybe McCoy's office chair was recycled into a chair seen in the background in some scene. Just a thought...

Another thought: A video release of "The Cage" -- perhaps just a VHS release -- featured an introduction by Gene Roddenberry, in which he's featured in many motion picture-era sets. The sets aren't lit well, and the various set pieces and props are arranged haphazardly, but maybe McCoy's office chair can be seen in some of those shots.

I'm going to check through some early TNG screens to see if I can find it.

However, I've already checked "The Cage" Intro and it's not there, unfortunately.

I've checked all of the chairs available through Modern Props as well; no luck. I may have to just make up a chair based on the available references. Not a biggee.

Re: Donny's TOS Enterprise Interiors

Glad to see some updates from you, Donny! I check this thread every time I visit the BBS.

I have trouble seeing McCoy's office chair having any design similarities to the TNG chairs. The looks of TWOK and TNG were so different that I honestly don't see a lot of crossover between the two.

Nice work on the Batmobile, BTW! :techman:

Re: Donny's TOS Enterprise Interiors

Well, after futilely searching and searching google images for a chair that may in fact be the same one in TWOK, I figured it was time to just model it based on the little amount of references we had. The work thankfully went quickly, and I'm satisfied with the results:

I think it has a very nice late 70's / early 80's sci-fi feel to it. What do you guys think?
