Donny's Klingon Stuff

Quoting from another thread but commenting in this one since it applies to the Klingon bridge. :)

Looking at this low-poly model, it strikes me that a major thing you'd want to do to make the Klingon bridge look more TOS-like is to simplify the shapes of the buttresses on the side. Matt Jefferies typically went for much simpler shapes in his set designs.
Yeah, but I think the larger point is Jefferies would not have designed anything like the TMP Klingon bridge at all. It's very much the "submarine that has been at sea too long" that Trumbull asked for.

That's why I keep pointing to the "In Thy Image" design, because it feels suitably "TV". But Donny will decide what he wants to do. :)

I started building a mock up of that last year when Donny shared it. It's an interesting design.

It's really rough, no detailing but the basic layout is there. I am planning on working on it after I get the Aries finished. Going to do two versions, the bulkier Klingon version and a more refined Romulan version.
Missed that before! I wish Mike Minor had done a concept sketch of it (or maybe he did and we just never saw it).

And, duh, I just really noticed the cross-section next to the hexagon. It sorta looks like they planned to have the "metal dishes" embedded in the beams instead of sticking out. Not 100% sure but that's what it looks like.

Can't tell as much of the writing is quite small, but that looks like a redress, either of sickbay, or the main briefing room behind the bridge

That actually kind of fits with what I remember of the TMP sickbay. And does explain the weird wall insert near the Captain's chair to hide that.

That's an idea to explore right there...

EDIT: I threw these plans into GIMP with the larger TMP map that's circulating, and I don't necessarily think this was going to be a redress. At least based off of the TMP sickbay. The walls don't line up. They would have had to take down the exam room walls entirely or move them. Granted they've done larger re-dresses for other sets, but it seems like a lot of work to change sickbay over for what would be an ongoing series.

I'm pretty sure that the S1 sickbay was a redress of the briefing room (from Encounter at Farpoint, during one of the evacuation scenes):

They used carpeted or painted cardboard inserts to cover over the windows, then they got their own set S2-onward (along with 10-Forward). The blueprints indicate the use of the original briefing room with those same big rounded windows. At least to me, anyway... :)

What I don't understand is that the final location of sickbay was where the TMP+ movie-era sickbay always was, and I'm curious why they didn't simply just redress it for TNG. Was it really that cost-prohibitive at the time, forcing them to change the briefing room set and leave the main sickbay set alone until a year later? This is odd to me...

Yeah but that was for TNG and Sickbay had to be redone a bit anyway because it was the bar in Star Trek III. Plus going from the lounge to sickbay on the same ship is a bit less of a change than a completely different ship.

This would have been pre-TMP when they were planning a long running show. Tearing apart a regular standing set to completely redeco it for another one is a bit more cost-prohibitive.

Not saying that wasn't the plan, just that comparing what was drawn for the Klingon bridge and what blueprints exist for the TMP sickbay don't quite line-up. I've never seen the Phase II sickbay plans so it might have been slightly different too.

No. Because they would not have construction plans for a redress. The plans would identify it as a redress. And there was no briefing room “behind the bridge “in the TV version of the ship.

Looking good! Do you know a way of having localised volumetric fog within UE? I've been wanting to use it to simulate dust and generate light shafts, but it always extends outwards to infinity. I want to keep it contained within a box volume.

Work is gradual, since reference is so scant. But I've got the aft module's floor modeled and the
greebles on the port and starboard walls. Also added some volumetric fog to give that hazy Klingon feel.

Am I the only one who hears faint drumming to the tune of the TMP Klingon battle theme? It's not loud, just subtle, like it's creeping in... getting stronger....

Unfortunately, I do not think this is possible. But to be honest I haven't researched it very much either.

Is that pad a lift to the upper level?
Yes, this seems to be the intent for this pad, as it appears to be attached to the recessed "tracks" on the wall behind it, and there is an opening in the ceiling above it. We see it in the Photorp Bay in TWOK, and although we don't get a glimpse of it in the K't'inga bridge scenes, we do see it on the schematics (bottom left plan view, each flanking the words "ELEV A")

Here's Nick Meyer sitting on the pad while getting a lecture from Shatner:

And a cadet standing on the pad:

The best view we get of the pad:

And here you can see the opening directly above it:
