Don Rode, Unused Footage, and the Vault

Inspired by another thread, I looked up the history of Lincoln Enterprises on Memory Alpha. Under the Film Clippings section, it says that Dan Rode, post-production editor, needed unused, pre-season three footage for a season three episode (which the Roddenberry's had pinched) . Does anyone know which episode it was for, and what the footage contained?

I'm pretty sure this anecdote originates from Inside Star Trek: The Real Story (1996) by Herb Solow and Bob Justman. You should be able to check the book via the Internet Archive if you don't have an easily accessible copy.

Memory Alpha is not entirely reliable as it treats all sources as equal, so just because someone—even Solow—says something happened doesn't mean it happened happened that way..

So I checked Inside Star Trek, and regardless of the veracity of the story, it appears there's no reference made to the specific episodes in question: either the episode Rode saw the clip originally, nor the episode he intended to use the larger, whole clip, for.
