Hmmm... I'm trying to think of existing guest roles for Starfleet officers in episodes after TG7 that could have been written for the Boma character instead. Thoughts?

The problem was that as the series went on -- they didn't write roles for supporting crew characters.
All landing parties needed was the big 3 and a disposable red shirt.
Then they didn't need the red shirt.
That's what I found disgusting-- guess what? -- Spock is an expert in EVERY field of science. Sociologists, biologists, meteorologists, botanists, geologists --who needs 'em? Spock knows that sh!t.

I guess a kind of interesting one could have been in "That Which Survives".
Instead of D'Amato, Boma as a science specialist. Having him survive "Galileo" and die in "That Which" would have been sad, ironic and indicative of the danger of serving.
And instead of Kirk and Spock discussing how pretty Losira was -- Spock could have said, "Where is Mr. Boma?" -- the way he should have asked about D'Amato.
